We just bought a house (Yay!) and I need to find window treatments, and I'm having a really hard time finding anything we like. I would like basic panels w/ a modern print. I feel like every curtain I see is either that shiny silky fabric, which is OK, but not what we are looking for, or it is a pattern that looks like it belongs in the Golden Girls house. I'm about ready to settle for plain white panels just so we can have something.
I also don't want to spend TOO much money because we have four pets and ultimately having them makes it harder to keep things nice. This is also what is keeping me from buying fabric and either making them myself or having my tailor make them for me.
Any ideas on places that sell pretty, modern curtains?
I actually really like Urban Outfitters for modern home decor. Maybe check out Anthropologie as well. Every once in a while, Marimekko fabrics pop up on Crate and Barrel. They are generally table cloths/napkins, but there are curtains as well sometimes.

Ikea has nice modern curtains, if you have one nearby or can order online (I think only a limited selection is available online?). Target has some okay stuff too, but IMO their panels are pretty wimpy in size and relatively expensive.
Otherwise, I'd get some fabric and DIY! Get the yardage you need of the decorative fabric of your choice, some plain white cotton to line the backs, some hem tape and an iron and go to town. Hang with ring clips for easy adjusting and new sewing at all. You can do the same thing with canvas drop cloths from the hardware store - cut & hem if needed with hem tape and hang with ring clips. You can use fabric paint and a big stencil to create a pattern you like, or use more hem tape to create borders or stripes with wide ribbon.

Elle- You just gave me an awesome idea!! I saw an outdoor curtain on West Elm the other day that I liked, and I was thinking about how to go about making one for myself. Your canvas drop cloth idea is brilliant, and there's even a stencil I've been wanting to buy that I could use on it. Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Urban outfitters, west elm, CB2. Also try World Market ( Cost Plus) ( www.worldmarket.com), pottery barn ( sometimes has good prices on sale) & crate & barrel ( of course). Anthropologie has beautiful panels, but rather expensive.
