My company was bought out by our biggest competitor. The sales department was mostly kept but both administrative offices are closing. I was told this on Sunday night as I jogged - that my last day was Friday (he didn't want to ruin my weekend by telling me Friday). I need to complete a 1 month job as a contractor for the new place to transition my job (as analyst and database manager). The severance is 1 weeks pay AFTER I successfully complete the contractor duties. My boss had promised me at least 2 weeks severance "even if it has to come out of my pocket" but now is not honoring that and thinks he's doing me a massive favor by providing me with 2 addtl weeks pay with the new company.
I knew the company was going somewhere around March and have been applying to jobs and interviewing whenever possible but it still doesn't make it any easier. We are a small company, we create a device for disabled people to communicate. I never thought ABC's "Person of the Week" with NYTimes features would leave me feeling so jipped.
I am working from the NY office until it closes, and today was the last time I'd see him. I was swirling with emotions and began to cry in front of him - ack I never do that. I am just so frustrated that this is so out of my hands. Going on unemployment is a 67% pay cut to me, so it will not be easy. I'm trying to be hopeful but this week has maybe been one of the hardest in my life. Bleh.
I'm so sorry. A lot of my friends at my previous place of employment are going through the exact same thing right now. It is really hard on them. Best of luck to you!
I'm so sorry. I highly recommend linkedin and career builder...
I agree! I'm sorry this happened to you! Definitely use linkedin. I'm making so many connections on there for when we move to California. It's a great resource.
