I'm trying to save money and my cable company said that if I bought my own (wireless?) router and returned theirs, I could save 10 or 12 bucks on my time warner bill every month. Since they cost around $40 or so, I could save around $60 in the next year. The problem is, I'm not good with technical things at all.
How do I know what type of router to buy? How do I know if it will work? Has anyone bought their own? I have a laptop, so I need one that would provide wireless access.
TIA!

As far as I can tell, I don't have a cable modem - just a wireless router (Netgear) supplied by the cable company. Do I need a cable modem?
ETA: This router looks to be the same one I have. Do you think I can just buy the same one? Sorry for the dumb questions, but I'm not good with technology?
if you can just replace the component with the identical one, then that's perfect. not sure what your set up is, but if you can just swap it out for $40, then do that! I don't think there's any reason it would not work if it's the same thing. can you call the cable company with the specs to confirm that it will be compatible?
