self-tanning and pale skin
Permalink Closed

I don't get out in the sun or go to tanning beds to tan because of the damaging effects to skin. For the past several years I have used self-tanner, but I have gotten to where I hate it. It stinks and it is sticky feeling. I just want to say "forget tanning" and just be my pale self. However, I feel self-conscious about it if I wear spaghetti straps or sleeveless tops.  Do any of you feel this way?  I wish I just would not let it bother me.

I'm trying to bring pallor back in style. I use a self-tanner on my legs occasionally, but I don't care what my arms look like.

There's a recent thread with some tanner rec's - maybe a better quality product would make you change your mind.

Yeah, read the thread I started. I'm very pale, so when people ( I live in CA now) point out how pale i look during summer - I call it "Aristocratic paleness":))) I won't go to the tanning salon as well....by the way, my husband used to work in tanning salon for about 1 month....you don't even want to know the inside details....However, I hope not all the salons are the same:)

I'm super pale too but honestly I just do not see what the big deal is about having a tan. I don't ever really think people look better with one. At best, I'm neutral about it. I mean, when I'm people-watching or just walking down the street with friends, someone will occasionally make a comment like "woah, that girl needs to lay off the tanning bed" but I don't think I've *ever* heard anyone go "woah, that girl is too pale, she needs to go get a tan."

I don't do anything to try and get one, and I slather on sunscreen like it's my job - partially to avoid the damaging effects, but also just because I don't really *want* a tan. Every once in a while I'll get someone who asks me why I'm so pale, or gives tanning suggestions without me ever asking for them, but in general I don't think anyone else sees it as a big deal, either.

I'm with Suasoria, I like some color on my legs but don;t care what my arms look like. I use a gradual tanner on my legs every morning in the summer. I dry off after my shower and put it on like moisturizer (which it is as well.)

Personally, I think some women look better pale. Think Nicole Kidman or Anne Hathaway.

I also "tan" the legs more, since I'm so pale that wearing skirt during summer looks a bit unattractive to me. HOwever, i do apply a bit of tanning lotion to the arms, just to make the look balanced. Just recently we went to the restaurant, a girl sat close at the next table, wearing a summer dress: her legs were VERY tan, a nice shade though, but her upper body - arms, neck - were WHITE, so it looked a bit weird, too contrast...

I don't really "get" tanning either. Tanning beds just don't seem like a good idea and the people I've seen get spray tanned end up looking pretty orange, in my opinion. I just don't really think it's worth spending the time and money on. If I'm outside, I put on sunscreen and get a little bit of color just from being outside, but other than that I don't seek out a tan.
