I've been doing this for about 2 years now. I wash my hair only about 1-2 times per week. It's very thick and has a natural wave. I prefer it straight so I have to blow dry on days that I wash it. On other days I'll take about 5 min. in the morning and straighten it. If I'm having a "lazy" day and don't nee to wash then I really don't have to do anything but run my fingers through my hair. Good luck!
BTW - My worst hair days are days where my hair is really "clean" from shampooing!

How long does it take to hit the "break through" point? My hair is very fine with a slight wave. I tend to wash it every day because it gets so oily if I don't and looks terrible.

This isn't a very good answer, but as far as I can tell from reading all the info I could get, it can take anywhere from a couple days to six weeks to hit a "break through" point and start looking really good. It kind of just depends on the individual. I did order some non-sulfate shampoo from drugstore.com (Giovannie Triple Threat Tea Tree shampoo, IIRC) because if you have fine hair (like me) they say that sometimes you have to do a "modified Curly Girl" where you use a non-sulfate shampoo every week or two (or less, whatever you need). I'm going to try to go a couple weeks without using it, though, in the beginning, to make sure that I'm not reaching for the shampoo just because I feel gross!

I've been watching Youtube videos about tying your hair up with a bandana to prepare for the worst days spin.gif

I actually have a garnier fructis hairspray that is CG-friendly. I don't remember exactly what kind, but it's in a green aerosol can. Basically, anything without those banned ingredients. I just took out all my hair stuff and read each ingredient label until I found out which stuff I could use, and that's what I do when I'm at the store picking out products, too.

Is part of the curly girl method the act of neither washing nor co-washing your hair as often too, or can you co-wash as often as you wish (every day or every other day)?  I need to word this better...  Will Curly Girl work even if I co-wash every day or every other day?

As for whether it feels gross or not - My head and hair feel just as clean when I co-wash as it does when I shampoo with sulfates.  This shouldn't feel like you "stopped washing your hair."

Dandruff - Tati, even though they don't explicitly say it, I think that Curly Girl probably helps people avoid having dandruff troubles once it takes effect because oil production should be reduced -- and buildup shouldn't occur because we're not using silicone.  My opinion/guesstimate.

Hmmm. I haven't read anything about how often you have to co-wash/condition, and to be honest I hadn't really thought about it yet.

I googled a little and this link, which describes the CG method, also mentions tips to keeping your curls looking nice if you don't want to wash the second day, so I'm assuming that's OK?

I'm totally gonna try the modified one and wash mabbe once per week.  I don't understand all their lingo tho.  What is a plop?  Did anyone figure that out?  PS:  My SO doesn't believe the photos - they look so good he thinks their fake!

I'm game! Like others, I kind of do this already, but I'll jump in on this experiment.

Right now, I only shampoo once or twice a week. BF does this as well- he only shampoos about once a month and just uses a ton of conditioner every day. He has beautiful curly hair (I'm jealous).

this is so interesting - i've never heard of this.  i assume it primarily benefits curly hair but what about straight hair?  i only wash my hair 2-3 times a week but i wonder if i should do a (very) modified version of this - like just stay away from shampoo with sulfates and use less (i think i use way too much anyway).  anyone?  would that make a difference in the way my hair looks?  i don't want it to be curly but it would be nice if it looked sleeker and more healthy (it's been professionally straightened if that matters).  thanks in advance.

It's best and easiest to do with curly or wavy hair.  I think everyone can benefit from using gentler and less frequent shampooing, but you have to do what works best for your hair and scalp.  I know I said it once already, but I think it's really important:  When I wash with conditioner--according to CG instructions--I feel just as clean as I do when I suds up a ton.

Thanks Tati!  I'm on day 3 no shampoo.  Co-washed today, hair looks good, but my hair's not that greasy.  Tossed a few products that had -cone high in the ingredients.  Not tossing my shampoo and conditioner yet, though, even though it has it too - it's much further down the list of ingredients and too expensive to toss no

I don't have a whole lot to report yet...I didn't do any cowashing or anything yesterday, just put my hair up in a ponytail, because I was running late. Then today I was running late again (ugh) so I didn't do anything even close to styling my hair. I just co-washed it, put gel in, wrapped it up in a towel for a couple minutes, and left the house with wet hair. So I'm not looking anything special today, but it has nothing to do with whether CG is working or not :)

I didn't toss all my old products (because if this doesn't work out, I don't want to have to buy them all over again), but if you keep using that conditioner, be aware that only sulfates can get out silicone buildup, so if you keep using products with silicones in them, you have to keep using sulfates to clean your hair.

I ordered this shampoo, CG-approved and mentioned quite a bit on the naturally curly site so I guess it's pretty good:

http://www.drugstore.com/products/prod.asp?pid=157111&catid=11936&trx=GFI-0-EVGR-49973&trxp1=10782&trxp2=157111&trxp3=1&trxp4=97&btrx=BUY-GFI-0-EVGR-49973

I'm using a V05 conditioner to cowash (I think I got "extra body" or something like that), and Suave Naturals Green Apple for my heavier conditioner. When I get out of the shower I put Herbal Essences Totally Twisted gel in, "plop" while I brush my teeth etc., then diffuse for a couple minutes. I figured out that if you get all your hair scrunched up in the diffuser and next to your head *before* you turn the air on, then turn the air off before you take it down and start working on the next section, there's way less frizz!

thanks for the info Kelly! I figured out I need hairspray and used a CG approved one today and noticed a big difference since yesterday. I need to look into buying a diffuser because my hair takes Forever to dry naturally. as of today, its been 3 hours since I washed my hair and its still wet.
I might have to buy that shampoo, but I really dont want to spend more than $4 or $5 on shampoo. My hair is thick and very long and I use up a lot of shampoo and conditioner!
when I have time....I will start jumping into CG's website.....but youre so helpful in here Kelly! lol!

Okay, I'm going to buy all of my products today. Nothing I currently have is CG approved. I'm hoping this works on my hair- it's pretty curly on it's own, but based on those before/after pictures in the thread Kelly posted, it might get really, really curly doing CG.

Just FYI, my TJ Maxx has that Giovanni shampoo almost all the time in economy pump bottles. That's what I use (the Tea Tree Triple Treat) and I love it (now that I've figured out I need to avoid 'cones when using sulfate-free shampoo).
I think it costs around $10 for a huge bottle. Smells so good AND it tingles!!!
