I had hair down to the bottom of my shoulder blades in Feb 2008 and got it cut off in March 2008. I was aiming for the Jenny McCarthy extra-assymetrical bob, but my bangs were not long enough. I trusted my hairdresser to do something cute, and it was cute, but I immediately hated it. The reason I hated it is because I imagined I didn't look as pretty with short hair as with long lucious locks (not that I am saying I am pretty--you know what I mean). My husband doesn't have a preference regarding my hair, because the first time he ever saw me and decided he wanted to date me, my hair was short. So why am I concerned? He doesn't understand why men get so worked up over how their wives/girlfriends wear their hair. Thank goodness!! I started growing it back out. Now it is just below my shoulders. However, it is so lifeless and stringy. I hot roll it every morning and use Redken hotsets , but by lunch it is just laying there. I am sick of it. I saw a picture of myself in our hometown paper today where I presented some awards to some students. My hair made me look sick. I have had people tell me that they think it looks good short. I wish I could just let go and get it cut short and like it. I just love "itsapinkthing's" hair. I have a friend who has a pixie cut and it is dyed this gorgeous shade of red. She exudes such confidence and I wish I could do that with short hair. I don't know what would look good on me, though. I am not sure what my face shape is and I always imagine that short hair makes my face look fat. I don't want a pixie cute, but can anyone offer any suggestions? Thanks for listening (or reading)
P.S. I have always loved this Jenna Elfman hairstyle, but a former hairstylist (there have been many) cut it that way initially several years ago, but every time I went back she would cut it differently--so I gave up)

I say cut it! It's hair and it will grow back. You sound unhappy with your current hair so try something new. You never know ;) Here are a few that are cute also...
I'm going to try this color combo next time I go in:

I totally understand what you're saying. I have fine hair and if I grow it too long, it gets so stringy and flat, yet when I had it shorter (in a bob), I felt like my face looked fatter and less feminine.
I just got this cut, which I think is a good compromise between long and short:
Here are some other shorter but still feminine styles:
Do you color your hair? I get the same feeling that my hair looks stringy and lifeless and dull. Instead of a haircut, sometimes new color will bring it back to life.
Is it all one length? I love longer hair, but it definitely needs layers to add some dimension and movement.
love the Cameron Diaz cut XtinaStyles posted. I could see that as a nice compromise between a long & a short style. Plus it looks like it'll get great movement.
I have wavy thick hair. And so of course I would love to have straight hair. I can't even really straighten it successfully because by the middle of the day, the waves spring right back. My point is that we all want somebody else's style sometimes. However, the more I've learned to work with and accept the limitations of my own hair, the happier I've been with it (and the more good hair days I get to enjoy too!)
I have fine hair that's sort of a mousy brown color, so I feel your pain! It's famous for not holding any style when long - I can blow it dry and curl it and spray it over and over and a few hours later it's toast. Now it's cut like the pics Sibeski posted - shorter in back, follows the jaw line in front, razored at the ends and a few piece-y sections in front. It really lightens it up so it can have a little volume without alot of work on my part, but the front is still long enough to play with a bit and to look feminine. I also use a semi-permanent haircolor to add a little more thickness to each strand and make it shiny without me having to put a bunch of heavy shine products in it.

I go between short and long hair, too. I have fine hair and have noticed that the more highlights I have and the lighter my hair is, the more body I have in it and the better it holds a style. I found a really neat website that you might want to check out to give you some ideas: http://hairstyles.virtual-hairstyles.com/consultation.html
