Beta-blockers and calcium-channel blockers?
Permalink Closed

Has anyone taken either of these two types of drugs?

I was just diagnosed with a heart condition that keeps my heart elevated pretty much all the time, and my doctor and I are trying to figure out which of these I should take. I'm wondering mostly about side effects and long-term safety. Thanks for any help you can give. (I've looked them both up online, but would like to hear if anyone has personal experience.)

I take a beta blocker as a migraine preventative. I have normal blood pressure, so taking the beta blocker gives me almost permanent low blood pressure. This manifests itself as a lack of energy at times, and I also get cold very easily/quickly and have to be careful when standing up form lying/sitting down because I might black out if I do it too quickly. I'd rather have these side effects than migraines (which suck, hard) but they're not fun.

I just read online that I shouldn't be eating salty foods, alcohol or caffeine...uh, oops. My doctor never told me that! And I've been on these for 5+ years.

Thanks, you too. One more question: have either of you ever felt short of breath since you started taking them?

Thanks!

Not yet, but i have only been on them about 5 weeks.

I am also on prednisone (a large amount) which has caused me to be kinda mean and swell and oxygen, which is wonderful. I have an oxygen tank at work and a machine at home.

Omg Mikacat! Is that all for migraine prevention? So you know, the medication I am on worked like a charm stopping my migraines. I hope it works for you, too.

Lisa - I have felt very, very slightly short of breath a few times. nothing I would even notice if I wasn't watching for it.
