Feminism - Alive or Dead?
Permalink Closed

This maybe should be in current events...

If you read my post about this already then you all know how ticked off I am on this issue. But it got me to thinking... is feminism alive or dead? Have we all just accepted that the way things are is okay and the best we can get? Or do we just figure everything will work itself out one of these days? I'm curious because it seems like the more people I talk to about so-called "feminist" issues (and yes I know this word is offensive to some but I don't care) the more isolated I feel in my opinions.

So I know there are a lot of talented, intelligent women on this thread and I want to know what y'all think. Is Feminism Alive or Dead???

I think feminism is still alive.  I don't think everything is as good as it's going to get, but I do think it's better, and I can always push harder for better opportunities.  I think inequalities are going to always exist for people that are different from the ones setting the rules (race, religion, gender, etc.) but that doesn't mean you can't still fight the good fight.  I think it's just a power issue, and an issue of tradition for the ones in charge.  I have yet to be seriously discriminated against for being a girl, and if I am, I am confident that I will still come out on top.  In a way, I don't mind chivalrous acts from men though- I don't think there is anything wrong with being treated like a "precious little jewel" (my sisters words) sometimes.  Sadly, if I was completely independent, I think my boyfriend would be sad.  I have to trick him sometimes    It's just my personal preference, and I don't think that I'm any less intelligent or less of a feminist because of it.  I get ticked when people think that feminists have to fit a certain role or else they aren't real feminists.  I don't always have to stand up for everything- sometimes I think it's better to let certain things slide.  If you look at racial discrimination- it has improved but it could always get better.  But does that mean that every time you're discriminated against it is because of your race?  It is hard to say.  Does that mean that every time race comes up, you have to defend yourself?  It is hard to say.  Sometimes people don't always want to talk about it, and I know I can't always have a feminist conversation or I would go on for hours.

I hear you Lynnie, and I don't think everytime I am discriminated against it's because I'm a woman. I'm also young, pretty, professionally inexperienced, and blonde. Those things help, too. And, just because I don't dress the part doesn't mean I don't know my rock 'n roll. (Meaning I look pretty straight-laced compared to most people in the clubs and shows I visit.)
