my new apartment

So, i will be moving into a new apartment with my boyfriend in six weeks.  I want to totally redo my current decorating and furnishing scheme, but i have some time to think about it since i won't actually have the time or money to do so for at least a couple months.

My general question is what magazines or websites do you all refer to when decorating?  I also have two specific questions.  One, my bedroom right now is simple but girly--think purples and greens--so kind of as a thank-you to my bf (he is moving to a whole new city just for me), i want to redecorate in a slightly more manly way, mainly just using different colors.  I was thinking beige and white, but that is so plain compared to what i have now.  Maybe blues and greens?  Any other ideas?

Two, i want to get slipcovers for my sofa and loveseat--i found a few at bed bath & beyond and linens 'n things, and pottery barn is too expensive--any other places i should check?

Let me know if i need to further clarify anything.  Thanks in advance for any help!

I think white/beige may be a little too drab. Maybe incorperate his favorite color.

As for sites and magazines, what is your decorating style?

My friend swears by surefit slipcovers. I think it's surefit.com. I just dealt with my ugly counch until I could buy a new one, because I knew if I bought a slip cover, I'd never replace it.

Maybe like a beige on the walls and light blue bedding. My b/f and I both liked that idea when we went to restoration hardware.

But yeah I would defintely get my slip cover online. Unless you have a Ross they have a lot of nice looking slipcover sometimes and they aren't that expensive. Or I know my mom got hers at Target on clearance for like $30.00.

I second the blues and beiges/tans for a bedroom. It's soothing, beachy, and still manly!

Thanks (everyone) for suggestions on the bedroom...i was briefly thinking of doing black, white and red, but then i would have to totally redo everything, since my current decorating is colorful but muted, and i have these framed monet prints that i really like.  i am really liking the white/beige and blue idea and will probably go that route.

About the sites and magazines, i like simple and contemporary styling with clean lines.  I have oak tables in my living room (from my mom--not really my style, but they are nice-looking and i can't afford new tables right now), but the rest of the furniture is a light wood.  I will probably get solid slipcovers in a light beige and then work around that (again, the couches are from my mom and are still in good condition but are a bright floral pattern from the mid-90s).

I really don't know what else to say about it, because i really don't know what i like yet...i am just getting out of college and until last summer, lived in a house with a ton of other girls, so everything we had was just a hodge-podge of what we collectively owned.  so i am open to all kinds of new ideas.

If you want some great decorating ideas, check out a bookstore. I've spent many an afternoon sitting on the floor at my local B&N, just flipping through books and jotting down ideas.

Also, my roomie and I got Pottery Barn slipcovers from ebay a couple of years ago. They were pretty affordable and they look great - although we're not too good with making them fit right (but that's on us, not the slipcovers).

I love modern and simple decor (with a few old pieces to add character) and my most beloved source of inspiration is a British magazine called Living etc.

I simply have to get every single issue and I drool over all the divine pictures in them! The only problem is you want to buy everything you see in that magazine...

Here's a pic of the next issue's cover:

The Real Simple magazines are amazing for style, decorating and organization.

I second Real Simple magazine - they are great and I've gotten some really great tips out of there.

Also, I live w/my bf and we actually decorated our bedroom in blue, white and beige - it looks great and we both love it.

Hi,

I just wanted to thank you all for your ideas.  I am going to go ahead with white/beige/blue for the bedroom, and I am going to get Real Simple at the store tomorrow

jacL - just one more tip - I got a lot of my white, beige, and blue bedroom stuff at Crate & Barrel - very cute bedding there.  That's where mine is from.  HTH!
