what are your thoughts on converse sneakers as opposed to, say, a sneaker w/o laces such as sketchers, etc.? which are more fashionable?? i've never worn converse in my life but they are sort of growing on me. i have been looking for some sneaks that are NOT for running to wear on the plane on the way to Turkey (as it will be like a 20 hr ordeal and i don't want to wear flats) and haven't found any that i like - they all sort of seem frumpy. i'm thinking that converse are the way to go.
so, do you have them, like them, dislike them? Also, what are the best bottoms to wear with them? i'm thinking hanging out-ish pants (like below) and jeans (also see below). I've seen them in the j crew catalog with light blue (chambray maybe?) trousers and it looked cute also.
here are the pics that have inspired me (would LOVE to see other pics if you come across them). from the sartorialist:
and i LOVE this outfit (from a blog):
btw my 2 yr old boy saw that pic and goes "mommy, that's you!" LOL yeah i wish :)
How great is that second pic?!? Awesome! I haven't ever had them either, but I think they look good on some people. And now that I think about it, I do have what would probably be considered a knock-off pair from 5 years ago. So yeah, I say go for it.
I think Converse are a classic look. I always have at least one pair in rotation. My only gripe is that they're not made as well as they use to be. If you're looking for sneakers w/out laces, Converse makes those too.

I really like them, I think they're classic and go with everything. In my experience they don't have a ton of padding or arch support so if you're fine with that then get 'em! My feet are on the large side so I tend to wear them with pants only.

I vote yay....I agree they are not made as well as they used to be, but they still do the job. I have the regular black pair with laces and the funniest thing is that when I wear them, I get compliments on them...they are just Converse! But I think they give certain outfits a extra bite of something, like in the second picture.
I've seen pictures of Nicole Richie wear them with short shorts, and I think they are a cute alternative to flip flops.
I say yay - I wear them mostly like the second pic (not that I look anything like her!) because I think they add a really cute offbeat vibe to otherwise more sophisticated outfits, as well as working great w/other casual stuff. Definitely classic.
I agree that they don't have a ton of arch support or padding though - I'd get a size that was a tad loose-ish and put an insole in them, fwiw.

I was thinking of getting a pair myself for a trip. I'll probably buy a size up and put an insole inside for extra cushioning. I like that they have a laid back vibe, but look more put together than a traditional sneaker.
I don't usually get to be the naysayer but this time I am gonna. I say no to Converse. I think it goes back to my childhood when my dad was a high school basketball coach and all the guys on his team wore those (it was the seventies!). I think of sweaty, smelly boys with caucasian afros when I see those kind of shoes! I just can't get over it. To me those are boy shoes (and I don't even like them on boys). I know it is just me though-LOL!
As an alternative I like the od school trainer type shoe. Something like this...
Personally I'm not a Converse lover either... Seems like the same thing can be accomplished with cuter ballet flats.
They've made a bit of a comeback and I feel like people are jumping on the same bandwagon as high schoolers... no offense. If you like the look go for it, its just not my cup o tea.
I vote yay. I have 4 pair of knockoffs and I wear them all the time! I usually just wear them with jeans, but they pretty much go with any jeans outfit! And I've seen people wear them with everything from jeans to sun dresses to trousers.
FWIW, I always get the Payless knockoffs. The originals don't come in half sizes, so their shoes are always a half size too big or small on me, and I can't get comfortable.

i LOVE cons! both me and my daughter have a pair and we wear them all the time. i'd love to have a bunch of different colored ones to match any outfit. i think they look great with anything and on anyone. i especially love them with jeans and with shorter skirts. i have a pair that are white with silver stars and my daughter has a pink pair with little white sheep.

thanks, everyone! it helps to read everyone's thoughts. i think i might try them on and see how they look irl on me. love the idea of getting a bigger size and adding insoles! also - starstuff - i actually prefer sneaks without laces normally (unless i'm running), but these look a little odd to me - like someone just removed the laces. also, it looks like there is nothing to help them stay on. thanks for posting though; they're def. worth looking into.

The tongue is sewn to the sides of the shoe (where the gromets are), and there is a piece of elastic behind that, so there is some stretch getting them on. They don't fall off -- I've worn them and I have a high arch so I'm constantly stepping out of my shoes. I have no problem with these.
