PLEASE someone with pets tell me your cleaning regimen is. I love my cat but I can't take it anymore! There is friggin hair all over this place. All over my bed (wtf having company is a disaster- have to launder every thing on the bed, and then not allow the cat in the room). I have a dyson and yes that takes care of the floors and coaches, but she jumps every where. Do you all take you long haired cats to the groomers? Do you use a special brush that gets rid of the shedding? What do you all do day to day to keep your homes fur free?
Unfortunately, I haven't found anything to help with cat hair, and I have two short haired cats. I can't imagine having long haired cats. I love my cats to pieces but I've seriously considered never getting cats (or any fur pet) again because of the hair. It's atrocious and unavoidable I think. I have nearly white carpets and two grey cats so as soon as I vacuum, they look filthy because the two of them roll around on it.
FURminator is amazing. My dog is a Samoyed mix and she sheds like crazy (I can't even wear black coats/pants cause if she brushes up against me it's over). This brush has helped so much. I use it on her about once a week and it really helps remove the loose hair before it ends up all over the place. It comes in three different sizes; I imagine the small one would be good for a cat.

Sorry about my picture problems. I didn't think it posted but there were two! For some weird reason I can't see pics from Amazon/Target in Firefox at work, but I can in IE. I'd posted using Firefox, and the pic didn't show up, but then I happened to check this thread using IE, and saw that it was there twice. Ack!

I tried to post a pic but for some reason it won't work. Here's the link from Amazon.
I may have to try this. I just did a quick search and they make one specifically for cats. I found a seller on eBay that has them for $14.99 plus $3.99 shipping. The only thing is, my cats will not allow me to brush them. It's a hassle every single time. They squirm, meow, hiss, everything.

Thanks! Yes my cat only enjoys being brushed for like 2 mins then she tries to escape. At this point I think I will have to let her know this aint no democracy and she does not have a say so in the matter. It's getting sickening and quite embarassing to say the least.
i 2nd the furminator!! it really works. i have a black persian that used to leave black fur chunks everywhere. i furminate him as soon as i see one on the floor and we are good to go for a few months. you wouldn't believe how much fur comes off the cat. also, my dog loves it. he hops in the bathtub (with no water) and i furminate him too. it really is a life changing experience.

We have the same issue - our cat develops an undercoat in the winter and is in the process of shedding it now. You can't even sweep it up from the floor because it just floats around like feathers in the air!
All we do is get our hands wet and go to town petting and scratching him, and just keep wiping the hair off, using your finger tips like a rake. At this time of the year when they're shedding heavily, once a week or once every other week works well to keep the hair off everything else. The rest of the year once a month is usually sufficient.

Swiffers work great for fur-bunnies on the hard floors. Brushing regularly helps, as does remembering that shedding this badly is temporary. Once the weather stabilizes, then it will slow down. Vacuum with upholstry and/or pethair attachment. If it is a really small area, and I don't feel like lugging out the vaccum, I will actually use a lint roller. Helps a lot.
Another furminator fan! It is unbelievable how much fur you end up with when you use it! I have two small dogs and they are shedding their undercoat right now, so it is extra crazy.
To a certain degree I just had to accept that life as I knew it would never be the same. I have a long cardigan that I wear inside now (I guess it's the equivalent of a "housecoat") so that all the pet hair goes on that and not my regular clothes. I have a dyson ball and this handheld, which is AWESOME for the price:
I also don't let them get on any bed. I had a hard time compromising to this with my bf (I wanted them to sleep with us and he didn't), but I conceded and now I totally agree with it. Our bed is still our sanctuary, it is completely pet-hair-free and the pups are simply too hyper to sleep through the night with us. However, napping on the couch together is a semiweekly occurrence :)

I also don't allow our dog or cat on the bed. However, They are allowed on most of the other furniture. But it isn't a problem because I keep a faux sherling square on each chair by the window (actually dog isn't allowed up there, but I know she sits there when we are out, hence the covers. I just toss them in the closet when we have company.
For the couch, its microsuede (bought on purpose due to dog) and it is easy to clean. But I have a dog printed quilt I put on th couch when we're out. When we're home I fold it and put it on the floor. If I'm on the couch and she wants to join me, I get out her quilt or let her join me on the blanket that I am usually covered it. Then, I wash these items once a week.
As for the beds, we close the door to the bedroom while we aren't home because the pets will sneak in otherwise. In basement for that couch I throw a sheet over it and remove it when I want to sit there.
I know it's not a glamour answer, but if I suddenly find someone at my door I am not embarassed that they will sit on my chouch and leave with a bunch of fur on their behind. I vacuum about 2x a week to keep it at bay, and vacuum the upholstry at least 1x a week.
I will check out this furminator though! This time of year I just brush the dog outside with one of those rubbery brushes. I use that in the tub too,a nd it helps a lot of the shedding.
