I went to Kohls over the weekend because I had a coupon and needed some little household things like kitchen towels and bathroom accessories. The kitchen towels I got were on sale for $2.30. Fantastic.
Then I go over to the bathroom section and find a really pretty set that would match my bathroom (decorated in dark burgundy and dark cream) The two things I really wanted to get were the toothbrush holder and the shower curtain rings. Then I looked at the prices: $19.99 for the toothbrush Holder and $25 for the shower curtain rings!!!! WHAT??? $20 freaking dollars for a plastic cup with two holes in the top??? And a little trash can to match the set was like $35. At freaking Kohls! I will NEVER understand why bathroom accessories are so expensive! I ended up going to the clearance section and getting a plain cream holder with no holes at the top, so pretty much a cup, for $1.99. Now that's more like it.
Are there any things that you have found to be rediculously expensive for no reason when you shop?
you know what else is expensive? trash cans. i went to target to find one for the kitchen awhile ago and i think it was 80.00... for a freaking trash can???

Ditto! I remember going to the bathroom section for a plain plastic pail and the cheapest one (like a foot tall) was about $25 wtf?

if you need small trash cans for the office/bathroom/whatever, ikea has some plastic ones for under $5. they come in a variety of colors.

i think a lot of items for the home are very overpriced. like curtains, for example! i hate buying curtains because they are always $30 + for a single curtain! why?? and shower curtains are also terrbily priced. $30 to $50 for a shower curtain? it's just a hunk of fabric! another thing i noticed was very expensive is table cloths. i cannot find one less than $30 for the life of me.
(maybe i'm just too cheap....)

Horchow was having a big sale today. I know it's not everyone's taste, but sometimes it's mine. I need this and that for our master bedroom redo, and I was almost incensed by the idea that a duvet cover or curtains would cost more than a piece of furniture like a console table or upholstered bench. It's just not right. When did fabric become so expensive?
Curtains are my favorite thing to just make. When you buy $30 curtains- you are most likely getting fabric that is $2-$3 a yard. You can buy nicer fabric- spend a few hours- and voila! Much nicer for the same price. After all the mark ups, things end up much more expensive then they cost. The factory needs to make money, and then the store. I think Ikea has well priced goods. Also- materials and freight need to be factored in. A large trash can has much more raw material than a small one- maybe 3 or 4 times more. And is 3 or 4 times heavier or larger. So it makes sense that it is 3 or 4 times more expensive. Yet no one wants to pay $80 for a trashcan when they think the "cost" is $15-20 for a trash can. And because it holds your trash ;D
I find costing and the idea of value very interesting. For example- those paper thin drapey t shirts that Alexander Wang, etc make. That fabric is very soft and feels nice. But the fabric is DIRT CHEAP. There's no material in it! Yet people will pay $100 for one of his signature line tees.
