all I can say is I tried it once and ended up looking absolutely ridiculous...I ended up having to go platinum because I could not live with the results. My opinion- go to a professional!
I've done the L'oreal highlighting one (the multi-highlight) with some good success. I would sugguest having someone competent to do it for you.
However - I've found every home dye kit has faded faster and damaged my hair more than a salon job, plus you never really know how the colors will turn out -- so I think the salon is worth it.
If money is a big issue, most reputable salons have training courses that they run once a week for their apprentice hairdressers (who have already completed beauty school) and are just working their way up in the salon. You can call around and see if any of them need models for highlights. I've gotten mine done this way for $20, when I normally would pay $100+.
I actually just used L'oreal Highlite Styliste and was really impressed. I have dull, boring Asian brown hair and just got my hair highlighted in the salon recently. I loved the look but not the price, and my hair grew out and was so... so it was time for a change. I did this kit first and then followed with a regular hair color. The result was subtle highlights giving my hair alot of texture and various shades of basically the same color. Lots of depth! :)
I actually just got the worst haircut of my life, but my new hair color makes me feel better. I am definitely going to use this combo in the future.
ps. I prefer this combo to Coleur Experte (which is the one with highlights and dye in teh box). This way I get a wider variety of colors to pick from and I felt like the highlights came out better with Highlite Styliste. Another plus was that Highlite Styliste plus Feria was still cheaper than Coleur Experte!
