It's not as damaging as lightening because there's no bleach. I'm a level 3 and I dye to match my natural shade and I think my hair feels healthier right after a color. I've also lightened and then gone dark shortly after and I noticed no additional damage from the darkening.

I agree. I think my hair feels better after coloring. I've heard it can also make your hair healthier actually, but I don't know if that's just a rumour or what.

I'm going to disagree here - dying your hair is damaging to it, period. Dying it darker is relatively easier on your hair than lightening bc you are stripping the color but its not healthy per se. It can make hair appear healthier, applying shine and disguising some damage.
I would try for a gentle formula - are you doing it at home? I've read good things about those 10 min kits from Clairol bc the shortened time=healthier hair.
^ My hairdresser, and two of my friends who are hair dressers have all told me that dying your hair dark does no damage, so that's what I'm basing it on.
Dying darker than natural deposits color, while going lighter requires the color from your hair to be removed so that a lighter than your natural color can be deposited. So, it shouldn't damage. If your hair is in bad shape going darker will help the situation.
