Out of curiosity, how many of you work (for the most part) a M-F 9-5 schedule (or something close to that). My boss seems to think that absolutely no job in America is 9-5 anymore (I beg to differ, my bf and the smelly roommate both work 9-5, as well as most of my friends). Of course, I don't b/c I work in hell.
i know how you feel. everyone i know works the 9-5 (except my over achieving bf who works till 7 then most nights when he gets home).
i am far from the normal 9-5 schedule. hospitals just don't work that way.
oh, and i guess neither does bcbg.

ditto here...but that's what happens when you're an hourly wage slave at the bottom of the totem pole. you get to work 8-5, but you get treated like crap and get no respect (where i work anyway). so it's a trade off...
that said, i do enjoy leaving all thoughts of work behind when i leave at 5 o'clock.
and i guess in the interest of full disclosure, i forgot about this, but they used to make me work one or two Saturdays a month. one day weekends (after being the only person running the entire library for 10 hours the day before) are no fun.
i have a 9-5. however i've found that it's kind of a trade off, the people that i know who don't have 9-5's (or maybe i should say jobs with traditional 8 hour shifts) make insane amounts of money. so it's like you have to choose b/t money and free time.

Eh. I'm salaried and I get treated like crap on a daily basis. My boss treats me like I'm an idiot and I definitely don't get respect. I barely get a break for lunch and sometimes get squawked at if I take one.

Nylabelle-look for a different job-can you do that? You do work in hell!
8:45-4:30 with an hour lunch. A lot of times I stay late though because I get more motivated in the afternoon and I tend to start big projects at 2pm or after.
When I worked, it was 9 to 5, and most people with any kind of seniority worked only a five to six hour day. Of course, we all acted like we were doing overtime and working all the time, but only the suckers really did. Funny enough, the hardest working people tended to be fired or forced out or things like that. I guess they didn't have enough time to play the office politics necessary for survival in journalism. Maybe your boss knows she's being taken advantage of, and is just trying to justify it. Either way, this girl's crazy. (But of course you DO NOT want to touch into the feelings that make her put up these defenses... I've seen that, and it's no good - no good for anyone...) Good luck! Hang in there...
8-5 with a 15 minute morning break, an hour lunch break, and a 15 minute afternoon break. 8:00 is such an ungodly hour- i can barely remember my own name so early in the morning, let alone do any real work. i can't wait until i own my own business and can work whatever hours i want!
i'm in the minority. i work at my own schedule... generally throughout the week, i work from 8 or 9 in the morning until 4 or 6 in the evening... but my office is in my house, so i work at night and weekends too sometimes...

LOL
I used to work anywhere from 8-5 or from 9:30-8:30 depending on which banking location I was in, this could also include some weekends 9:30-3:00 on Saturdays .
With my new job that I start next week I will be working 8-6 with only a half hour lunch (which is mostly spent at the office). Plus I will be on call every other day (I don't have to get out of my bed or anything but still)...
Nylabelle I have worked retail (clothing and retail banking) and know how bad the hours can suck and that it's possible to be treated badly. I have learned one thing from my work experiences, things rarely ever change, I was tired of the hours and lack of appreciation and preferential treatment and decided I needed to claw my way out of that situation.

I work in retail so 9-5 is a figment of my imagination. I work 7-4 3 days out of week and 2 nights.I take an hour for lunch whenever I get ready or hungry.
