What is your shopping style?  Do you decide what you want, go on a mad hunt for it, and pay almost any price to get what you want?  Or do you set out with a general idea of what you're looking for, hoping to find something that catches your eye at the right price?

I voted for both. I decide what I want when I am browsing through magazines and see an item or I see it on another girl and I think that my wardrobe needs such a piece. I also have staple stores/boutiques that I like to browse and see what they have.

i am like vanessa, i make a spreadsheet of what i want/need and that's how i stay on track.  there's always things that i will find when i'm shopping, but for the most part i know what i want before i go shopping.  which is good because i'm a faster shopper that way, and i don't impulse buy.

Definitely the former - I almost always know exactly what I want (brand, piece, size, colour etc.) and then I'll search to the ends of the earth for it. I do think I am a bit pathetic, though, I just can't help it all the time.

based on the poll alone i'm a bit of both, but when i read your question i ended up being neither. i rarely ever go shopping with an idea (specific or general) of what i want. i just look around to see what strikes me. but i also do a ton of window shopping b/f i commit to a purchase.

I am the same way. When I go shopping, I'm not looking for anything particular. I usually buy things that either catch my eye or things I feel that I can incorporate in my wardrobe. But before I buy, I have to have to mull it over because I'm so picky.

I voted for both because I do make lists, but I allow for some impulsive shopping if something catches my eye.  For instance, I am currently looking for flats and kitten heels to add to my shoe wardrobe.  I have all heels except for one pair of flats and I think my feet need a rest.  I have made a list of what I want, but I know when it comes to shoes I will be a little impulsive.

My column (yes, plugging the site... but, hey, I'll allow myself) sheds a little light on my (um.. not so good) shopping habits! I swear I am trying to get better. A little dough and a bunch of mags are a recipe for disastrous overshopping.

i really liked your article about the way that magazines seem to guide our purchases.  this is the first year that i waited a month after things have been in the stores (ok, except for shoes, i did buy a lot of wedges ) but i think it really works.  the reason i waited this year was because i knew that i couldn't wear most of the styles until at least mid-late april.  a lot of "trendy" pieces that i wanted (like tunics) i decided i didn't really need.  so i think the one month wait period is great advice.

I read your column and really enjoyed it. I've stopped reading fashion magazines now for about, oh, 6 months and it's working out perfectly. I stay on top of the fashion trends through online shopping, this site, and style.com. It really helps me stay away from being tricked into wanting something vs. purchases that I'll wear and will fit into my wardrobe even after they aren't trendy anymore. I am finding that I enjoy shopping a lot more now than I did before. When I used to read all the mags I'd have strange, obsessive needs for things that in no way could I 1) afford or 2) wear reasonably.

But to answer the poll's question, I decide what I want first and then look for it somewhere in a price, color, and fit I can approve of. I don't mind not finding it on the first try because the hunt is part of the fun! For instance, I spent about a month looking for the perfect wedges and then I finally found them at a local boutique on sale for $28!!! It was definitely worth the wait because they're super-cute and very comfy. I've already worn them a ton. With shopping, patience is definitely a virtue.

I stopped reading fashion magazines about a year and a half ago when I discovered FH.  Before that, I would get all excited about Lucky and Vogue showing up, but once I got into FH, I lost interest in them entirely.  I would receive them in the mail and basically just end up throwing them out.  This site (and the now defunct FH) deals with fashion on a more realistic level:  what are REAL people wearing, how you make fashion wearable, where the sales are, etc.  I also like the interactivity of it.
