I need a bag to go with an outfit for a wedding. I haven't bought a new one since NY Eve 1999. I can't believe how much they cost and how ornate they are! They cost more than I pay for shoes! Either that, or they have bows and flowers and they are not my type.
So, how many bags do you own, what kind, and where do you get them? Any creative ideas?
I don't have a lot of occasions for an evening bag, but the last time I did, I found a very pretty embroidered cosmetic bag, it was just the right size, and not expensive. I also have a few silky bags I got at a dollar store in differant prints.
Since I never use evening bags- I tend to find them at semi-cheesey places like DSW Shoe outlet or Burlington coat factory for $16.99 or something. I just get something sort of non-descript, black and sparkly, or I found a really pretty white satin one at Burlington with a silver lattice design on it. I'm sure out of about 50 choices there, you will find maybe one or two that are ok.
I know I sound like a broken record, but Target always has evening bags in all styles and shapes. They recently (at least by me) had many beaded bags in many colors - naught a flower is sight (well, they ALSO have flowery-bowy ones). The most expensive ones are like $16.
If you have time, check thrift stores and ebay, too. AND, if you don't have a ton of uses for an evening bag, dig through a friend's/family member's closet. One of my favorite bags was my grandmother's and it's so unique.
I have a TON of evening bags. All my friends call me when they need a "sparkly bag," as they put it. I have them in all colors, shapes, and sizes. I get them from Target, like tiara said, amiciaccessories.com, BR on sale, and mainly thrift stores. Thrift stores have the best selection of gold and silver purses. Beaded, lame, silk, etc. are all at thrift stores. Spend a Saturday or Sunday poking around a few places and I'll guarantee you'll find a bunch that will suit your needs. Also, I hang them on my wall at home so they serve as decoration too.
I think a girl can never have too many evening bags, shawls, scarves, etc. because they take an ordinary outfit and spice it up so it can take you into a nice evening out without having to spend the money on a fancy dress or outfit.
Thrift stores! Brilliant, blubirde. I walked by about three of them today and didn't even think to look. Thanks for all the ideas. I've been thinking in too narrow of terms: department stores.
I've noticed that some bags look like cosmetic bags, and some cosmetic and travel bags are better looking than the stuff in Macy's.

I was in a thrift store last night and thought about this thread. There were some great bags there for super cheap. It's definitely the best way to go. Classic, unique, cool, and inexpensive. Good luck!
