i think you have to take what they're saying with a grain of salt. in all cases on the show they are dealing with women that have NO clue how to dress themselves. i personally don't think that wearing black with color is a no-no, but what i do take away from the comment is that there are SO MANY other richer color combos out there... if you START there, you are way ahead of the game. there are plenty of great outfits out there that involve black and a color... but anyone can do it and without much thought. that's why T&S have a show about what ELSE to wear with your green top besides black pants. i personally live a full and happy life not wearing black. i own one pair of black trousers, a black a-line skirt and a black tee... of all my clothes these items collect the most dust. i think black is a bit harsh of a color for me so i always tend to choose something else. that's not to say that black cannot be the next ST girl's best friend.

just my thoughts.

I voted no, because originally I was thinking of an all black outfit or black top with bright accessories or jewelry.  But I do agree that black pants and a top is boring and fairly predictable.  I do, however, think it looks great to wear say, a black top and a kelly green skirt, or pair an all black outfits with turquoise jewelry.

hey everyone-  im pretty new to this forum.  i've been reading for a while, but i've never posted!  this topic is super interesting, b/c i've never really heard anyone say you can't wear black with color!  i totally agree about the "college uniform".  i have to say i fell into this my freshman year of college when trying to fit in with my new sorority sisters.  i soon got very very bored with these types of outfits and now whenever i get lazy and put on something similar to the "express outfit" i feel very very dated.  here's a question though-  i saw this outfit on stylediary and thought it looked cute.  am i the only one?  or is it not the outfit, but that the girl has a great figure and would look cute in anything?  i hope this pic shows up!  if not its on the bottom left corner of page 11 of the street style section!

I think it's really cute!

But from what I read, I'm probably the only one in this forum that loves black...  I wear it a lot and I think it looks very classy.

I guess I have to confess... I love black, too.

I wear black tops a lot but it's usually with either jeans or grey pants. I don't like the combination of black pants/skirt and a bright-colored top but I do think a muted or soft color would look great with black (like in that pic).

I started this thread and I am so happy that so many of you have responded.  Another thing that annoys me about these people like Trinny and Susannah is that sometimes there is inconsistency.  Now I love to watch WNTW with Stacy and Clinton, but I take their advice with a grain of salt because just recently there was a lady on there and she wore bright clothes all the time.  She wore shoes to match her top which is one of the things she was criticized for.  Now, I agree that she did not dress very well, but the advice they gave her was not too clear.  At the end of the show when she debuted her new clothes, she was wearing (if I remember correctly) a gray pair of pants, some neutral color of jacket, and a royal blue blouse with black shoes.  It looked very pretty, and she said she promised she would not go out and buy a pair of royal blue shoes to match the blouse.  Stacy said that she was really worried she would.

Well, a few shows later Stacy comes out wearing an outfit consisting of a fuschia jacket, ecru and fuschia floral skirt, yellow blouse, and YELLOW shoes.  It looked beautiful and I think probably yellow shoes worked well with it, but she violated the rule she gave the lady a few weeks earlier.  I am sure there was some "fashion" reason, but they are just not clear enough what that is.

ANyway, now that I have gotten that off my chest I feel better.

Dizzy, I couldn't have described it better! I know someone who subscribes to that Although I do like red tops with black pants sometimes.

Generally I agree with their theory, although I do like fuschia, lavender and pink with black, and as I said before red. Of course there are always exceptions, and I think the theory applies more to black pants (as oppposed to wearing a black top with bright bottoms, like Dizzy said). I hate it when women wear tops in pretty springy colors like pale green or sky-blue and then wear black pants on the bottom. Blech.

I actually *kind of* agree with this rule (for myself, tho - I am not about 'rules' that have to be obeyed with fashion) - I just don't like the look of bright/bold colours and black together. That outfit from stylediary is OK, imo, because the pink is a pastel and not fuschia - I think it would look bad with fuschia.

Black and bold colours (especially solids) looks too early-90's for me. I also have very little black in my closet and definitely go for grey/charcoal over black msot of the time.

i think it all depends of the clothes. when I was in college in L.A. and when my first few years in New York I wore black almost exclusively. But now I don't wear as much black and I don't like going out in head-to-toe black. i love color, and since my skin is fairly dark I've found that I can wear a range of colors -- often those that don't flatter most people. Bring on the bright yellows, soft pinks, reds, golds, blues, etc. But, nothing beats the little black dress!

I disagree in general.  I think that the look is dated, but that doesn't mean that it can't ever look "good."  I mean, I know I looked good when I wore my favorite black pants with whatever little club top I found, usually light blues, pinks, and lavenders....one good one was army green, it wasn't like I was wearing fuschia or yellow with black pants, maybe that's what they mean by bright colors.

I think it's just "out" right now, but that doesn't mean it will never be in again.  So they are wrong unless they are just talking about right now.

Well, I love black and think as in anything re: style it is really how you wear it...

I wear a black pair of pants with a poppy red top and it is high-contrast, but I always wear the combo with my Kingman blue-turquoise jewelry and IMO it looks stylish and I always receive compliments when wearing the combo...

But, I'm biased, because I probably own 30+ pair of black pants (10 pair of the black Drew pant alone).  Anyway, I wear black all the time, year-round and always receive compliments, but then again I channel Julianne Moore's wardrobe in the "Laws of Attraction", meaning, I work for a conservative company, hence I dress conservatively, and though I would love to spice it up, since I'm on the road 75% of the time, it is just easier to pack black and not worry about what shoes to bring, etc....

I am trying to branch out into color with my "going-out" clothes, but it is a hard step to take.  I realized I was in trouble and needed to make an effort when I was last home visiting my parents and the the people that sit in front of my family at church exclaimed because I was wearing a pink top, when they were generally used to only seeing me in black!!
