i was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for an evening dress....my law school is having a Barristers Ball (for those that dont know, ppl are comparing it to a "law school prom" type thing). its formal wear, but from pictures from previous years it doesnt seem too over-the-top dressy but everyone is definitely wearing dresses in all of the pictures and i do want something nice. i havent gone shopping for this kind of dress in a long time so any suggestions would be great!
eta: im thinking something long would be nice, but again, im open to all suggestions to get started on the search.
how much do you want to spend? I found some gorgeous ones for around $500, but I don't want to go to the trouble of posting a bunch of dresses if they're out of your price range... Any other specifics? do you like empire waists? do you want something fitted or forgiving? do you have a preference for straps, halter, or short sleeves? does it have to be bra compatable? how do you feel about cleavage for this event? are sequins acceptable? any colors you particularly like?

regardless of details, I wanted to share these dresses anyway because they're so pretty, and I think appropriate for the function. All from bluefly, and range in price from $219-$592:

this dress is awesome! i remember the barrister's ball - it's totally a law school prom!
I love the look of this dress and the price isn't bad. I just can't bring myself to buy another brown formal after the last one I had to buy. If it was any other color I would have grabbed it by now.
I just found a really pretty cranberry formal at Neiman's this morning. It was on sale and they are running an extra 40% off on certain items so you might want to check there as well.
From my experience, there will be women in pants, and formal wear. No one really worries about how dressed up (or down) you are. If you like the dress and want an excuse to wear it, then great. On my last cruise I wore an old Banana Republic dress simply because it was easy to pack and the dinning room was usually a tad chilly.
