Brown was arrested after an argument with a woman police have refused to identify which came after a party before last Sunday's Grammy awards in Los Angeles.

He was being held at a police station when he should have been performing as one of the star turns at the event.

The Los Angeles Times reported today that Rihanna told police Brown had hurt her the night before the awards.

Meanwhile Rihanna's agents said that a concert due in Malaysia on February 13 would have to be rescheduled to an unspecified date "in light of recent events involving Rihanna".

The 20-year-old singer had been due to visit Indonesia and Malaysia on her "Good Girl Gone Bad" tour.

Brown has been booked only on suspicion of making a criminal threat after walking into a police station on Sunday night. Authorities said the district attorney can choose to expand the charges.

Brown's arrest has potentially devastating implications for the 19-year-old heart-throb because it unravels his charming, wholesome image.

"If it's true, his career is probably over," said Billboard magazine's editorial director, Bill Werde, although he cautioned that "it's important to withhold judgment until all of the facts are known."

On Sunday, 19-year-old singer Chris Brown turned himself in to the police after an unidentified woman named him as her attacker in an incident that took place hours earlier in Brown’s rented Lamborghini. Later on, the media confirmed, citing sources from inside the police force, that the woman was in fact Rihanna, Brown’s girlfriend. Now, it turns out that the arrest was made for assault with a deadly weapon, and that Rihanna suffered multiple contusions and had bite marks on her body. 

Gossip site and paparazzi agency TMZ spoke to officers involved in the ongoing investigation, and learned that Brown’s arrest was made under Penal Code Section 245, Assault with a Deadly Weapon. Nevertheless, no weapon was found at the place of the altercation, as the police report shows. There was an umbrella in the car, but the report explains it was not used in the fight.

Nevertheless, as TMZ points out, that does not rule out the assault with a deadly weapon charge, since “a person’s foot or other body part can be considered a deadly weapon depending on the circumstances.” Sources from the police also tell the aforementioned e-zine that Rihanna also presented multiple contusions and bite marks on her body, with speculation having it that she may now be at Cedars Sinai clinic, undergoing medical observation.

As it was revealed yesterday, an arrest warrant was issued in Chris Brown’s name after passers-by witnessing a violent altercation in the street called the police. By the time it got to the scene, Brown was no longer there, but his victim still was and she identified him as her attacker. At the time this got out in the media, the police refrained from revealing the name of the woman, saying that in such cases it was customary that the identity of the victim was kept away from the public.

Hours later, Brown surrendered, had the bail set at $50,000, and was sprung free. He has made no comment on the incident so far, but is now supposedly building a very strong defense for himself with the help of attorney Mark Geragos, known for his work with other huge stars such as Michael Jackson and Wynona Ryder. A spokesperson for Rihanna was also unavailable for comment when word got out in the media that she was the victim in the Brown battery case.
