my vision has always been pretty good (not 20/20, but close) but now i feel like i need glasses! last week i drove to the airport at night to pick up a friend and i couldn't read the roadsigns until i was really close. my friend who was in the car with me had to read them for me as we were approaching so i wouldn't miss our exit! my eyes get tired too. i'm currently in my first "office job" (been here for 8 months) and i have to read/look at a computer all day. so this probably has something to do with it, right? i had no idea that vision could be affected so quickly (less than a year seems quick to me). is it possible that my eyes are just tired but my vision is okay?
i should probably get my eyes checked, right? i'm thinking maybe i'll need reading glasses? then again, it seems to be distance that i'm having problems with lately. what can i expect when i go in? it's an optometrist, right? how expensive will this be? i have coverage for vision- what are the copays like? (obviously i'm pretty clueless about this stuff since i've never had to deal with it!)
I would get my eyes checked just to be on the safe side. You might just have tired eyes. I'm not sure about co-pays or anything. I'm sure its not that expensive. Maybe ask around your office for doctor recs and can ask about copays while you're at it.
Yeah, you should probably get them checked out, especially if you can't see road signs. Remember that next time you have your license renewed, the DMV will check your eyes.
Having your eyes checked is really no big deal at all. They have you read a variety of eye charts, then try different strengths of lenses on you to see which one you see best with. Given that info, the optometrist will give you a prescription for lenses.
It sounds like you are near sighted if you are having trouble seeing street signs. Reading glasses are for when you can see things farther away, but not close up.
The reduction in vision could be from being at the computer all day, but not necessarily. Diet and age have a lot to do with it as do good old genetics. Most people need glasses at some point in there lives.
I'm not sure how much it costs to see an optometrist. I've always had insurance and my copay has been $10 or $15.
I've worn glasses since I was about 16. Actually I really only wear them when I need to see stuff far away, like driving at night or if I'm sitting in the back of a theatre. I treat glasses like jewelry, I love buying them and matching them up w/ outfits. There are a lot of cool frames on the market right now.
The same thing happened to me ~1 year ago! I always had perfect vision, but then I started feeling like my eyes were strained and could not see far away as well as I used to. After seeing an eye doctor, he said I suffered from "Computer Strain"! So I have to wear reading glasses while I read on the computer (~90% of my job is reading stuff on the computer). Since my eyes were so strained, I was starting to lose some of my distance vision as well. Maybe this is what is happening.
Honestly, getting reading glasses has CHANGED my life! I don't know what I did w/out them. Though I must admit I am the ONLY 25 year old I know that has reading glasses
i have the same problem. i am nearsighted, but not extremely so--i just have glasses to wear for driving at night. i noticed it exactly the same way you did--it became difficult to read street signs while driving at night.
it may or may not have to do with your being in front of a computer all day. our eyes just age, too. most vision plans on insurance are not very good--i would expect to pay a few hundred dollars for the test and a pair of glasses. it will be worth it, though--i am guessing that your eyes are probably not very bad (like mine) and you will be able to keep the same pair of glasses for a long time. i think i've had mine for 3 years or so already and my prescription hasn't changed at all.
It couldn't hurt to go, especially since it sounds like you haven't been to the eye doctor in a good long time. I've had a lot of luck with the doctors that work in LensCrafters...it may sound shady, but they are real doctors. Then if you do end up needing glasses, you can pick them out right there.
I don't have vision insurance, but the most a checkup has cost me is about $120.
The same thing happened to me too... I got this screen this goes over my screen and reduces the glare. I highly recommend it, I don't have the tired eyes problem anymore!
thanks, girls! i made an appointment for an eye exam on tuesday evening. hopefully they can figure out what's going on/what i need to do differently...
Ah yes, eye strain. It's why I wear glasses. I can't watch tv, or do computer work, or look at my teacher in class without wearing glasses. If I don't have my glasses I get a horrible headache when trying to concentrate on anything. I also have to wear my glasses when shopping, because i find I get a headache in the mall. I think it's the lighting. It sucks.
well, i just got back from my eye exam- i'm getting glasses!
apparently i have "convergence excess and accomodative insufficiency." otherwise known as "high esophoria." uhhhh, right. the doc said that my vision is not really that bad at all- it's a muscular thing. basically i'm becoming nearsighted because my eyes have to work really hard to focus on things up close. so then they're too tired to see things far away, especially at night.
so i need to wear glasses when i do "close work"- basically all day at work. whoohoo! i'm actually secretly excited- i've always loved glasses. they're so cute! i consider them a fashion accessory. i'm going back soon to pick my frames. i almost bought some today, but i figured i should sleep on it- i need to be positive that i LOVE them since they'll be on my face every day! any tips for picking frames?
