UPDATE on JOB INTERVIEW!
Permalink Closed

UPDATE:

I GOT THE JOB!!! I'm 90% sure as of right now I'm going to go for it so I can at least say I tried and all so I won't have any regrets.  Any words of wisdom or encouragement? I'm kinda nervous about moving away and telling myself nothing is permanent and I can move back in a few years.

Edit: I should have left up the old stuff but oh well.  Basically it was just my frustration with playing the waiting game and being nervous that I was going to get rejected again.

didn't see the original post, but congrats on the job.  i'm glad you're going to go for it. fortunately you're at a point in your life where you can still take risks without worrying too much about the ramifications.  i admire you for stepping out of your comfort zone, and hope that it's a positive experience for you. and even if things don't work out entirely the way you want them to, at the very least you'll learn and grow as a person. plus we're always here for you anytime you want to vent.

Houston is a 5-6 hour drive from home so I can be home on weekends if I want and my family can come see me.  Its about a 1 hour plane ride.

Thanks yall!  I really am excited about it just scared to grow up.  I think once I get over there I'll be fine because the office is huge and has a ton of young people there (unlike working for the state with a bunch of old biddies) & LMonet is moving there too so I have an instant friend! I really think I'm going to do it and yall will just have to listen to me whine every now and then about being homesick Usually I cry and flip out before I go and then once I am there or where ever I'm going I'm fine (I swear I'll be crying on the way to my honeymoon because I'm leaving home). Definetly headed to my counselor next week to talk things out.  She's all for me leaving so it'll be good.

Congrats on the job girl.  Moving is hard (I moved the same distance from Michigan to Chicago), but it was the best decision that I have ever made.  Good luck:)!!

The first step is always the hardest - there is a chance you won't like it and then you could always move home.  But you could also really loooooove it!  And, from my research anyway, Houston is a pretty young city (they have alot of young families and 25s-35s) and they have a university there as well which draws the college crowd.  Goodby old biddies!!!

I still get homesick for my hometown - I just miss the familiarity of it and of course my family.  It always passes and I know I can go back someday if I choose.  The only time I hit rock-bottom (aka crying and flipping out) was when I moved out of my parents house (I only move 15 minutes away for crying out loud).  Just let it sink in and hopefully it'll all seem less scary once you've lived with the decision for awhile.  Keep us posted!

ETA:  Hey, what does FH think of all this?

Yeah that's what I'm facing Leah - moving out of my parents home all over again.  Oh its so hard.  Sometimes I wish I never moved back in but I know that it was all for a reason.

Well bf is sad but very supportive and happy for me.  We are already talking about him flying out once a month to visit and all the things we can do there.  Kinda sucks he's still in school but he's almost out too.

Congrats on the new job! Moving is hard but it'll be worth it in the end (even the act of moving itself has a way of evolving us, whether we want it to or not).

I'm from Houston and you'll definitely have a ton of things to do and meet a lot of people. It's huge and sprawling and it just depends on your personality if it's for you or not but it's definitely a cool place for a few years at least.

2 pieces of advice: 1) live inside the loop - it's essential if you don't want to drive forever and 2) learn to drive with attitude and over grassy embankments - houstonians are rabid about their driving!

2 other plusses about Houston: has great shopping and great culture (museums, shows, etc.)

Thanks Blubirdie. I'm still thinking it all over but i'm pretty sure I'm going to give it a try.  What are the ghetto areas of Houston so I know to avoid them.  I heard East Houston and Southwest Houston but I'm not really sure.  What is the inside loop? Any other words of advice. BTW how far is Austin from Houston? I've never been but I want to check it out too.

The loop is Loop 610 - a HUGE circular highway that makes a big, well, circle. It encompasses most of urban Houston, although not all. Downtown is inside the loop. The Art District is inside the loop. Rice University (my favorite part of town) is inside the loop.

Where is the job located that you are going to take? That's the biggest issue. I can give you some tips once I know that. You want to live as close to your job as possible since traffic can add a lot of time to your commute.

Austin, depending on where you live in Houston, is about 2-3 hours away from Houston. I live in Austin and my parents live right outside of Houston (NW of Houston) and it takes me exactly 2 hours to get there. It takes them about 20-30 minutes to get to Houston, so that gives you an idea. But if you live south or southeast or southwest, it could take upwards of 3 hours, maybe a little more. It all depends.

Message me (either here or on myspace) your new (maybe) work address and I'll give you some more pointers.
