This is AWFUL - so I work in an office where you can hear pretty much everything. I was just sitting here working when I heard what I thought was a rather large belch. Both I and another girl both explaimed "Gross!" Then, almost at the same time as the sound occurred again, I saw something weird happening in the office across the street that is under construction and exclaimed "What is going on over there?"
Then I realized it was this man who works for our company who has had a tracheotomy. I really want to crawl under my desk and die of embarrassment. My second comment was not directed at him, but it sounded like it was. But the "gross" part... argh.
The thing was, I had just seen him walk by and should have known, but I was so engrossed in my work that it didn't register. I really hope that he didn't see me and where I sit. I am still flaming red in humiliation.

Welcome to my life! I do stuff like this ALL THE TIME!
Hopefully he didn't know it was you or didn't know it was in response to his belching noise. I would have probably tried (probably unconvincingly) to try to talk in hearing distance from him about the "gross" story your friend just told you on the phone.
