purchasing an IPod
Permalink Closed

some of you may know that i just bought a 2005 Mini Cooper.  It is currently floating its way across the pond to me... so i started thinknig about add-ons i could get- one being an IPod dock (just like their sisters the BMWs have)... which would mean i would also need to get an IPod (which i have been wanting- so good excuse right?).... but first i want to hear about your experiences with IPod... worth it?  do i really have to get all my music off ITunes?

I want to get the Mini IPod in pink- bonus- my birthday is coming up and boyfriend said he would get me the IPod for my birthday if i really want this...

Totally worth it (although I have the full size-not the mini). And you don't have to get all your music from iTunes. I stopped using "illegal sources" years ago, but I was able to still put that music on my iPod as well as any songs you want to move over from CDs you own.

I haven't looked into purchasing a dock for it, but I did get the iTrip for about $35 so I can play my music through my car stereo. It works really well.

So my advice is DO IT! DO IT! DO IT!

i plan on moving over all my cds, but what about songs i want to download without purchasing full albums?  do i still have to use ITunes or is there other sites I can pull from?  For example, i saw the advertisement for the new Napster that is $15 a month

You can put pretty much any music on your iPod. I had a bunch of stuff from Limewire that I put on it. I would NOT get the mini. I wouldn't consider myself really into music, and I already have 15 GB on my 20 GB. It's only $100 more and you get 5 times that amount of music. iPods are cool and they have all those cool accessories, but I've found mine to be fairly finnicky. There was a while where the menu key wouldn't work and it still won't play music I bought off of iTunes. If you live in a city with a Mac store it's ok because they will take care of it, but if you live in Maine (like me) you can either send it in and wait a few weeks for them to send you another one or just deal with it. I'm going to NYC next month so I'm just taking it in then.

i got an iPod shuffle as a gift, and i LOVE it. it's perfect for working out, since it's about the size of a lighter. totally suggest you get one. i heard you can join real.com and download compatible songs for $0.79 each. somewhere i read that napster songs don't work w/ iPods, but i don't really know for sure.

I love my iPod mini. I would recommend getting a case for it because it's so little (you can find ones that match the color of the iPod).

I have about 300 songs on mine and it's not even a quarter of the way full, so I think it's sufficient!

I have an iPod mini and my BMW is converted to play the iPod.

LOVE it.

I never listen to the radio anymore...

Me + ipod mini =

We are inseparable. If I had to choose between my lovely apple green iPod and my BF, I'd have to do some serious decision making.

I am a music nut, but I only want to listen to certain songs at certain time. I have 500 songs in my mini now and it's plenty. But I could definitely understand why getting the full size makes more sense.

I have songs I downloaded years ago illegally that work on my iPod. As long as the file is an mp3 file or an AAC file, it can be played in the iPod.

The second I figure out how to make my BF's iTrip work, we are never gonna listen to the radio again.

i agree with maddie--i have the mini and i'm running out of room.  i like it because it is small and light, so it is great for working out (which is all i originally wanted it for).  but now that i am hooked, i think i might save up for the big one and just have two.

i think it depends on what you want to do with it. i have the mini and love it b/c it's small and easy to carry around. i walk a lot, so i don't want to carry around a ton of junk, and the mini fits into my palm or can be easily clipped onto my clothes (yeah, i'm a dork and use the clip).

that being said i do want to buy a bigger one (i'm just waiting to see what they come out with next) mainly b/c the battery on the mini is so/so and i really want something that's going to last a long time (or longer than the mini) without needing to be charged.

also i wouldn't mind having more space on mine. right now i have 782 songs on it (there's still more space) but not everything that's in my itunes is on my ipod. it's not bad b/c i still skip around a lot (i leave it on random and sometimes i don't want to hear the song that pops up) so it's not like i'm missing something, but i wouldn't mind having more memory for travelling etc.

I love my 20 gb ipod.. I think it is totally worth it (not like I bought it, it was a present). I have about 2,500 songs on it right now which takes up around 10 gb.. I've put all of my illegal mp3's from back in the day as well as some of my favorite cds on it.. Even though that sounds like a lot of songs, I still have so much more music that I'd like to put on it, so I'm glad I have the 20 gb and not the mini. The minis are tiny which is great, but I don't find my 20 gb bulky or burdensome at all. The battery life is great, too. I use mine everyday on the weekdays for about 2-3 hours/day, and I only charge it once a week (approximately).

i just bought an ipod this weekend at target.  they were selling both the 4gb mini as well as the new 6gb mini.  the 4 is now selling for 200 and the 6 is selling for 250.  money was an issue for me so i went and bought the 4.  if money isnt an issue for you, i would go and buy the 20.

either way, you should definitley buy an ipod.  i'm so in love with this baby i go to sleep and wake up thinking about it.  =)

i forgot about the battery life issue.  the mini does have problems with that--mine runs out of battery power pretty quickly and it's a bummer.  but ipods in general are the very best invention ever, and you really can't go wrong no matter which one you buy.

i thought i wanted the Mini originally, but now you guys have thrown me.  Since it will be running off a dock in my car- battery life is not really the issue, but i would like to run with it when i go to the gym.  so maybe i should get the mini.  but then i think about storage space and i think i should get the reg. Ipod....

AIGH!  what to do?  what to do?

The regulars are really prettty small. I certainly wouldn't describe them as cumbersome. I go running with it and it's really no problem at all.

You might want to consider www.freeipods.com.  Someone on ST might still need referral.  I just got my free 20GB ipod 3 weeks ago, and love it!
