I always keep the boxes and just stack them up in my closet.. It's much more organized than finding one shoe and then having to look for the other for 5 minutes.

I have them all stacked in their boxes too, which makes me tend to reach for the pairs closer to the top of the pile. hmmm... Also do you organize by catagory i.e. flats, heels, boots, etc.?
i have all of my shoes in their cardboard boxes, too. i have filled my entire linen closet with them (the beauty of being a single girl living alone). all of my sneakers, flip-flops and other casual shoes are on a rack in my closet.

Rocky - do the boxes from the container store actually take up less space than regular shoe boxes?
I think for regular shoe boxes, the sizes vary depending on the brand of shoe. The good thing about the container store ones are that they are all the same size and thus easily stackable. They are pretty compact too.
I have an over the door shoe rack from bed bath & beyond that I keep my sneakers, sandals, flip flops, and pumps/wedges that i wear alot. it holds about 30 pairs and was a real space saver. i keep my boots on the floor and then i have about 6 nice pairs that I keep in those plastic boxes.
I have a 2 level shoe rack that goes across my whole closet. It does'nt fit all my shoes, so I put the rest on the floor and just try to keep them together.
I have four things like this built into my closet. Mine have 12 cubbies each, so they hold 48 pairs. I double up on flip-flops (2 prs/cubby) and I put boots on my shelf.
I am losing my closet system when we move so I will have to get another one.

I have the shoe bag on the left hanging in my closet. Since I'm cheap and double up, I can fit maybe 20 pairs of shoes in this.
The rest have spaces on the floor. A few of my shoes (sneakers, Uggs, birks for getting the mail and stuff) are on a makeshift shoe rack (it was a table in a previous life) right by my door.
Holds 12 pair, and the rest are lined up on the closet floor. I also have a clear storage drawer thing in the bathroom that I keep off season shoes in.

I like the box system. I have two shoe bags like the one on the right:
One over-the-door thing like the one posted from Bed, Bath, and Beyond,
And about 20 pairs in their boxes, including boots,
And then trainers and indestructables like my old docs from high school that I can't bring myself to throw away are all on the floor of one of my closets.
Having tried all these, I think keeping them in boxes is the best. I would love to get the ones from container store and put pics on the outside, but don't have the time or $... (I have a lot of shoes)

i checked out the box system at the container store yesterday and you can buy them in case quantities 20 boxes for $27. i think i am slowly going to start converting my closet over to wooden hangers and clear boxes for my shoes from the container store.
Yeah, I've heard that too, and I myself am thinking about doing it also. LOL Most of shoes are still kept in the boxes they came in, but HALF of them I don't know what's in there, because there's no pic. of it on the outside!!!

I've heard of a suggestion. Putting them in shoeboxes, but taking a picture of them so you know which shoe it is.

I dont do this but I should...My mom buys those clear boxes at our local store Lowe's. If they are winter shoes and we are in summer then she puts them up on a shelf. But if its the opposite then the summer shoes are on the shelves and the winter ones are on the floor in their boxes stacked up. The clear boxes help a lot because then you can see which is which!
