top 10 albums

Hi all,

A friend and I are exchanging top 10 lists. It's fun, but putting what I'm listening to now into historical perspective is harder than I thought it would be. I keep feeling like I'm going to forget something. Anyone want to share their top ten picks?

Ah... this is really hard. Ok, these are not necc. MY top 10, but 10 I think are great in the history of rock/pop music (Miles is in there just because) mainly in terms of influence.

~ The Beatles, Abbey Road
~ Rolling Stones, Sticky Fingers, maybe? Or Let It Bleed, for Gimme Shelter alone.
~ Led Zeppelin, Led Zeppelin II
~ Johnny Cash, Live from Folsom Prison
~ Bruce Springsteen, The River
~ Nirvana, Nevermind
~ Miles Davis, Kind of Blue
~ Public Enemy, Fear of a Black Planet (or It Takes a Nation of Millions... but I prefer FOABP)
~ Stevie Wonder, Songs in the Key of Life
~ The Who, Tommy

eek! and Bob Dylan! Blond on Blond, of course. That makes 11, but oh, well.

hon. mention:
~ Pink Floyd, The Wall
~ Grateful Dead, Europe 72 (because with them, it'd have to be a live album)
~ Red Hot Chili Peppers: Blood, Sugar, Sex, Magic

recent great albums that will one day belong on a List:

~ Beck, Sea Change
~ Wilco, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot

I love a great many other smaller bands that have put out terrific albums, but I think this question is more about bigger acts.

One could argue that Elvis, Michael Jackson, and Madonna all have a place there, but I'll let someone else take those.

I will no doubt revise about 50 times!

I'm way too uninformed and young to make a really good list, but here's mine regardless. There's some stuff that's too new to be on it, but whatever. The Strokes and Radiohead are amazing.

I am glad we can edit these posts because I know I am going to want to change this a couple of times, it is so hard to pick. I feel like John Cusack's character in High Fidelity.
Ok, it is too late for me to come up with the list, I need to think about it.......how can you narrow it down to ten? There are at least 5 must-have albums by Bob Dylan!! Ok, I need to sleep on this. This is a great poll.

dc, the artists can be as small or big as you like; just good albums. This may cause more editing from you all, but edit away!!! It's fun.

I've come to the conclusion that I am a poor judge of which might be the best albums *ever*.  The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, The Beach Boys, have all released historically significant and influential masterpieces.  This music was released before my time, so I don't feel entitled to rate them.

I've decided that my top ten list will simply be good albums (from my time) that I like.  These are albums which, at one time or another, occupied my cd player for weeks or months, and I'd still return to on any given day.  These are albums that I would want if I were stranded and had no other music. My list is not numbered and should be considered in no particular order.

I'm surprised that so many mainstream artists made the list, considering the amount of indie music/smaller name artists I enjoy. This list is bound to change, but here's what I'm feelin' right now:

Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon
Moby - Play
Radiohead - The Bends
U2 - Achtung Baby
Nine Inch Nails - Pretty Hate Machine
Jeff Buckley - Grace
Coldplay - Parachutes
Oasis - (What's the Story) Morning Glory?
Depeche Mode - Violator
The Verve - Urban Hymns

Ok, I think I am ready to submit the first draft of my top ten list. I have decided to go with the top ten albums that mean the most to me, not considering how or if they have influenced the world at large.

In no particular order:

ooops, that is 12. I think I will have to cut one Bob and one Tom but I cant decide which ones. I really feel I have to include the two Dylan albums since they represent two distinct phases, and Tom, well, I love both those albums so much,...... back to the drawing board.

ok, first edit, where I am not taking away but adding. My list would not be complete without Kite by Kirsty MacColl. One of my all time faves. Evidently one of 13. At least it is a lucky number. Unless it falls on a Friday, and I was superstitious, but I guess that is for another thread. Still thinking about which ones to cut....

I love Kite! That CD reminds me of sitting in my living room with my dad on a weekend morning in elementary school. Especially Innocence, I loved that song. I remember we were allowed to bring a song in to music class one day and I was sooo excited to play Innocence. All the kids were making faces and stuff and when it finally ended the teacher was like, "So who would leave the radio on this station if this song came on?" One girl raised her hand just to be nice. Of course Cate Bridenstine had to bring in No Diggity, which went over a lot better.

Ok, you just inspired my to buy this CD on iTunes because I didn't have it. Thank you, I love it soooo much! I also forgot how much I love You and Me Baby.

Maddie, I am happy to bring back such pleasant memories for you!! Okay, so the kids in your class didn't like Innocence, that just means they had undeveloped musical taste!
I bought Kite because of the song Days. I had only heard it once and it would play in my head all the time. So I got the CD and I loved the whole thing. This was probably 10 years ago. I wish more people would post their top ten albums.
