Here's the deal. I did some thinking yesterday, and the conclusion was that I am turning into a fat slob. I am always tired, I don't feel like working out after work, I tend to eat fat stuff and sit on the couch instead of doing more productive things. I know what the solution would be, and it is starting running again. I had to stop a year ago b/c of my knee, but it should be fine now. I used to be able to go for 10 miles, I had a lot of energy, and my skin looked so much better that it does now.
I am really scared the first month is going to be like a torture: I know I have to start slowly, for 10 mins, and so on, but still I remember when I re-started running 3 years ago and it wann't fun.
Help! Any suggestions, words of encouragement, anything, will make me lift my butt from the couch, hopefully!
It is definitely hard to make the transition from couch to physical exertion. I refuse to work out on the mornings, but lately I have been very good at working out after work. Here is my big secret....drink tea!!! After work I automatically make myself a cup of tea. The tea energizes me enough to get off the couch. I know that sounds so simple, but it honestly works, for me at least!
I find when the weather turns I get all mopey and not wanting to do anything and is gotten cold this week and my motivation has fallen way down. How about just starting slowly like you planned and just make it fun and not a chore. When you are able to do something and enjoy it you will keep doing it. If you focus on all the negatives and how you have to go and do it everyday you aren't going to enjoy it and stay motivated.
both of you girls are right. I am focusing on the negative aspects, I guess.
Tara, the biggest part of me missing running so much isthe morning thing: I love mornings! My big problem is, once I get home from work, you'd need a gun to make me leave again. But if I run in the morning, there are more chances I'll really do it. Let's see what happens tomorrow...
boy, u sound like me back in december (except for the part about being a runner, i just used to be naturally thin & ate crap & never worked out, but it caught up w/ me). i finally got to the point where my "loose" jeans were so tight & painful they actually made me cry! (the crying was also emotional cuz i felt so fat) i decided for the new year i would join a gym & get some work out videos. my secret to actually doing this stuff is to schedule it in like u would a class or something that u do regularly. i know that every week day i wake up, walk for an hour, work, go to the gym (or do yoga video lately), then i can sit back & relax. plus, when i go to the gym i go straight from work cuz i have the same problem where once i hit that couch u couldn't get me up w/ dynamite!! good luck, and from a veteran slacker/procrastinator know that it can be done!
ayo, it also really helps if you have someone like your SO start exercising with you. I joined the gym with me SO a few months ago and we really encourage each other to go when we feel tired or lazy.
Thanks for posting your desire to run. (I know I've responded already). I've never been a runner/jogger but I've been trying to jog a lap here and there on the track at the gym and today I was able to jog half a mile all at once! Then I walked 2 laps and did 3 more laps (8 laps = 1 mile) so I almost jogged 1 mile today!!!! I'm just thrilled over it. If I can do it you sure as heck can.

you go girl! I am going tomorrow, no matter what.
Hope I'll be able to post afterwards... Thanks you all for the replies!
there is some great advice posted...my advice is my music. i love going to the gym to listen to my ipod. i download a great playlist and go nuts on the elliptical. before i became a runner, i used the elliptical to get me in shape to even start running. so maybe having a great mix to look forward to listening to would be a great motivator (once you start, your pants not fitting you anymore will be a great motivator-reason to shop!)
