I've run into a few people who claim to be Christian and then call Obama a Muslim terrorist in the next breath.  Gee, how tolerant and accepting of others they are, as such good Christians.

It sounds like your cousin thinks that those that do not hold the same religious views can't get along, agree with each other, and/or make mutual decisions?  That people who don't believe in God in the same way she does are incapable of being a thoughtful, responsible leader?  Sounds slightly illogical to my ear, but then again I'm an atheist so what do I know?

All the responses I've tried to write for your cousin end up snarky, so I got nothing.  Unless of course you want to send her a snarky response and then I've totally got your back wink.gif

If I were you I would respond with, "How can you be a Christian and say hateful things about other people? God tells us to love our neighbor as we love ourselves."

thank you girls for having my back. Yes I am Christian but I try and choose not to judge. Judging is not my job but to try and accept people for who they are. I guess no matter what religion you are or not, theres people that still contdradict themselves. Nobody's perfect. Its just so upsetting that she used religion like that on me! I didn't respond. I let it go. I just make sure not to touch this subject with her, there's no point with her. This happend a few weeks ago....so for me to bring this up to you gals, I guess I'm seeing how much it annoyed me. I haven't told anyone else what she said, including my husband. But thats probably cause he's for McCain! lol!
thanks Elle, I think I'm just gona shrug this one off. But I know who to go to if I need to! smile.gif

Wow. The good news is this kind of talk will be over in ten days or so...

It's sad that her challenge was directed at you personally, not your candidate. I don't blame you for being annoyed and even offended considering how well she must know you.

I think it's good you didn't respond. I probably wouldn't have the same self-control!

It seems like people want us to vote for the familiar.

I am female, therefore my preference must be female.
I am white Christian, therefore how could I go against GOD and vote for something else?

It seems like this election is full of discrimination. I feel like it is exposing a lot of racism that we thought we had solved...

I just read the "extremely well-thought out response to a politically charged e-email" post and well, it's long, but there might be a measured response you can use in there.

Why would it matter if he WERE an atheist? The United States government was originally intended to be secular, neutral in terms of religion. Do you truly believe that a person's not believing in the Christian god is, all by itself, enough to disqualify that person from being a good president? Obviously speaking as an atheist minority here, but I just get so frustrated by the persistent implication that not believing in God means a person doesn't have any morals, as though that's the only source from which we can learn right and wrong. Compassion, kindness, fairness, tolerance, wisdom, respect for others--these do not stem exclusively from Jesus, or God, or even religion in general.

sephorablue- I never said that if he wasn't Christian that that would disqalify him from being a good president. I also Never said that not believing in God means you have no morals, etc.
what I said was " i know better and don't believe that", thats all. Because all these rumors are out there about him. As a Christian, yes I would pray that our president believes in God. But if not, then not. Out of my hands. That's all! I don't look at or treat people any different depending on their religion. Or anything else for that matter. I try and not judge, thats not my job here on this earth. I'm not saying you do this. But just as others that don't believe in my God may roll their eyes or think were stupid for what we believe in.

If I may, I think Sephorablue was just expressing frustration about how these campaigns inevitably use, and sometimes abuse, religion for their end goal. This campaign in particular has used religion and ethnicity rather unethically. I don't think it was in reference to anything you or anyone else said here...just a general response to what's being said "out there..."

In historic terms, it wasn't that long ago that Kennedy was questioned up and down because his Catholic faith was regarded as outside of the mainstream.

But what I really wanted to share was this, from an online "friend" on another board, who is a registered Republicans, NRA member, Christian, and lives in a swing state.

"We have been getting a barrage of robo-calls from 'our' party, apparently designed to appeal to our most "base" fears. In the past few weeks they have been increasingly vile. Unable to combat the calls directly, we have fought back by changing our answering machine message:

Hello and thank you for calling. We have been members of the NRA since we were old enough to take communion. As a Christian family, we have no interest in your robotic messages of hatred, bigotry and fear. We choose to vote for love, hope, and change, and we hope you will join us. Have a great day!"

I'm just throwing this out there: 1) Obama is a Christian - has been for some time - that's not the problem. 2) The problem is someone who thinks, "You're an atheist!" is valid political discussion.

That's a really hurtful way to deal with a sensitive issue. Particularly since it seems like religion is something Tati values highly, and I'll bet anyone who knows her would know that about her.

"You're not voting the way I want, that means you're not a Christian..." is just NOT acceptable discourse. It's controlling and insulting. You don't get to label the people who disagree with you. Especially when you pick a label that obviously doesn't fit reality. Who acts like that?

I hate to say it, but that kind of behavior isn't very Christian. Not that your cousin is not a Christian, but it seems she isn't living up to her own ideals at the moment. I'm sorry the election has her so upset that she would treat family that way.
