Pants Pockets
Permalink Closed

Some of you Project Runway fanatics may know where I'm going with this...

On one of the episodes, Michael Kors criticized a pair of pants because its pockets stuck out. He said that all the women he knew cut the pockets out of their pants because the extra material made them look fat. Do any of you cut the pockets out of your pants? I've never done it but I'm curious to see whether you girls have and if it actually makes a difference...

i've never cut the pockets out of my pants. but i tend to avoid pants with side seam pockets since most of the time they bulge which makes it look like my thighs are too big for my pants. another pant peeve of mine is when pants aren't lined properly and still have pockets, so the pockets show through. imo it looks like the pants are too tight even when they're not.

I am actually obsessed with this.  I don't understand why designers insist on making seam pockets on pants - they are SO unflattering.

I bought a pair of seam pocket pants from jcrew years ago and never really wore them b/c i felt huge.  Recently I had the pockets sewn shut.  The tailor wouldn't cut the pockets out b/c he said it would mess up the pants (??!), but he did sew them shut.  They are now amazing, and my favorite pair of work pants.  I am not sure why he wouldn't cut them though....

My jcrew pants bug me like that too.  I like everything about them except that the pockets bulge out.

Sheilsbabe, I was thinking the same thing as you when I watched that show.  "Am I the only one who doesn't do this?"

If they're tacked closed I never open them, but I never thought to cut them out.

I am really insane about pants pockets. Side seam pockets bother me when they bulge out, and I hate the lining issues that honey described but my #1 pet peeve is....
pants with only one back pocket. Why why why? I don't understand this. I want my ass to look symmetrical. Does anyone know if there is a reason for this? It is so common. I won't even bother to try pants on if they only have one back pocket. No back pockets is fine, but just one drives me bananas.

Wow! Good to know that you girls think about this too. My jeans pockets irritate me a lot because they bunch up and I constantly feel the need to adjust them...maybe I should cut them out..hmm...

Cricket - I totally know what you mean! I felt like I was in a different, horribly uncool universe when he said that.

I have a pair of cords that have pink satin pocket linings - they worked their way out as I walked!  I just sewed them shut and trimmed out the pocket fabric.  They fit much better now w/out the extra fabric at the hips, and I don't have to worry about the pockets unexpectedly popping out.

I just started getting the pockets taken out of my pants. I asked the tailor to take both the front and back pockets out from my Alvin Valleys, and I noticed that they looked so much better with the pockets cut out, since the fabric is a bit thin. Before the pockets would show through the fabric even though the pants aren't tight at all on me.

I also owned a few pairs of J. Crew chinos and couldn't stand it when the pcokets would bunch out on the sides...I don't understand why companies even bother to make on-seam pockets.

on seam pockets are the devil incarnate.  i always sew them shut, but have never cut them out.  (michael kors has made me consider it, though.)

This is so funny...I never buy pants that don't have pockets. I have chapstick and keys with me at all times and I go *nuts* when I don't have them on me. They never poof out on me though.

OMG!! This drives me crazy as well. Express Editors (which are one of my favorite kinds of pants) do this and it is, imo, their only flaw.

I have cut some out, but never sewed them shut so it gets a little drafty, but you can't see skin

On others if they are tacked shut I leaved them too.

My sister has had velcro put in so if you really need the pocket for some reason they you could use it, but otherwise it stays shut.
