I bought a light brown (kind've fawn-colored) vest recently. It buttons up the front, is kind've a tweedy fabric, but flat (?) and has a flat bottom, not pointy like a traditional vest. Anyway, I've not yet found a single outfit to go with it. I want it to look polished for work, but not ultra conservative. Any ideas? I'm starting to think I might never be able to wear it.

I like that it has a flat rather than pointy bottom - that's going to help keep it looking current. I would may be wear it with trouser style pants, but then keep your top really basic under - don't go with a button up, which is what probably most would consider if they were using the vest in a work outfit. Do something a little unexpected - maybe a really nice supima thermal like the one by Splendid (because you can dress it up from here with jewelry and what not to offset it's casual feel) or a basic white tee - just have to keep the neckline from being too high on it or it'll look funny. From there, i'd do a lot of jewelry - maybe a good bracelet at the wrist and a long lariat style necklace or even a medallion style but if you do lariat it needs to be bold and if you do medallion it needs to be subtle. I've got a vintage one that hangs long and has a big ruby gem surrounded by gold - it's really cute. that is what i'm envisioning - something similar
keep your shoe low and pointy toe on this outfit - it'll keep the overall look more chic because the vest is going to pull from a round toe and look too annie oakley-esque, which isn't bad but isn't right with this outfit.
Also, try wrapping the vest, ala SJP in the gap ads with a cardigan - and pinning with a brooch - not sure if it'll work but it's worth a shot
