Children with severe ADHD
Permalink Closed

My new nanny position is with 3 boys: ages 8,4 and 2.  The 8 year old has SEVERE ADHD.  If he is not medicated it is hell.  Even when he is medicated it is really really hard to take care of him.  You literally need to know where he is and what he is doing at all times.  He is the most difficult child I have ever taken care of.  Do any of you have experience with ADHD? Have any tips on how to reason with kids who have it or how to negotiate with the kids? I have a really hard time getting him to do things he doesn't want to. He throws fits, drops to the ground, runs away, etc. Any tips would help. Thanks.

I have no advice, but that sounds like a nightmare. Good Luck.

I don't really have too much advice, only sympathy - my brother was severely ADHD growing up, and it was before doctors really started recognizing it (or medicating for it).  It's really, really difficult.  I've also taught a few children like this (their parents were oblivious, of course!).

How do the parents handle it?  Do they acknowledge that he's difficult?  If so, do they have any special techniques/rules that work well?  If you're asking here, my guess would be that they don't!  There are lots of books written on the subject now - maybe checking out a few from the library would help?  Then I'd just try to be as consistent as you possibly can - set your boundaries and repeat, repeat, repeat when he throws a fit.  While it'll likely never be easy sailing, he should figure out that he won't get far with you by pushing back.

Good luck!
