How do you know when to get rid of stuff?

I just bought two pairs of cords that are so deliciously flattering and comfortable. I have three other older pairs which are all in really good condition, but the two new pairs are just so nice I have a feeling I will always wear them first and ignore the other three. Should I get rid of the older ones just to edit my wardrobe or will I regret it. They are perfectly fine just not as nice as my new ones. This is just one example. Do you guys buy to replace the old or just let things stack up? I guess I think it's better to have fewer things that are absolutely perfect, yet sometimes I worry if I get rid of something I will regret it. Advice/opinions?

i've recently been going through this with my wardrobe. it's hard b/c i'm a pack rat and like to hold on to stuff for as long as possible, but it's not worth it to let things you don't wear take up space.  i recently did  a lot of closet purging (might do some more over the weekend) and just pretty much got rid of anything that i was so/so about. i know lots of people say if you don't wear something for "x" amount of time then you should get rid of it, but i don't follow that rule (unless it's something that's brand new and never been worn). b/c there are some things that you don't get to wear everyday, but that doesn't mean you don't need them (like nice dresses).

usually what happens is i'll put on an outfit and then decide at some point during the day that i hate my outfit. then i'll figure out why i don't like the outfit -- usually b/c a certain peice doesn't fit the way it should and get rid of that peice. that way i don't repeat the same mistake.

I am a little slow to get rid of things, but when I finally do, I don't remember ever missing the item, especially if it was replaced with something nicer.

I purge my closet more often now because I am working on not being a packrat.  But every once in a while, I have a stack of items that I am not sure I won't wear again, I put them in a plastic storage container under my bed (which also holds some special items I plan to keep no matter what, like 2 of my mom's vintage dresses) or I put them in another room's closet.  If I don't find myself going to dig them out within a year or so, I will donate them.

Back to the point, you probably won't regret getting rid of the older pairs.

I'm really big on purging. I hate having things i won't wear around. for your pants, are they all similar style but just different colors? or are they different, such as the wale, pocket detaling, etc.?

I wouldn't get rid of them quite yet.  I second Lorelei's suggestion for moving the said items to another closet or under the bed.  I do this regularly, and almost always end up 'shopping' in my boxed up clothes!  If anything is left in the box after I have 'shopped' in it a couple times, it goes to charity.  I find it much less painful to give things away if they haven't been staring me in the face in my closet everyday.  I would put your cords away for awhile and see if you miss them - if not you could probably do without them.  Or, you could always hem them into capris!

I am horrible when it comes to getting rid of things and here is what I've found.  Wear it, if it makes you feel bad, get rid of it.  If you feel good about your self when you wear it, keep it.

That's what I do too. If you don't miss it within a certain amount of time, I give it away. I hate to give things up that I think I won't wear again only to discover that I really want it back.

I wouldn't edit the wardrobe just now. Wait until you've had the cords for a while and see if you really do neglect the three old pairs you have.

I get in the mood to purge on occasion and that's when I do my closet cleanings. I know that if I don't like something, I don't wear it. So I basically keep what's still fresh or whatever I'm still really attached to wearing. I will throw out whatever no longer fits and what makes me feel matronly or just crappy in general.

I am a purgeaholic. I hate clutter!!! For example, in April I donated/tossed almost everything in my closet, excluding the things I always wear, basics, and suits, special occasion dresses. I never miss anything!!!!

I'm big on purging as well.  If I haven't worn it in a year, it's gone.  I don't replace it unless I find something I absolutely adore.  It has to be a striking or unique piece to justify a purchase.

thanks so much girls!  i used to "maybe box" idea to purge my closet last night.  it was so much easier & less dreadful knowing if i wasn't sure i could put it in the maybe box.  also a tip:  what started it all was that i had to put my laundry away & since it had been a while since i had done laundry there wasn't much clothes in the closet to begin w/ so i knew everything that was left was up for dismissal.

I'm so bad about this.  My system is I will move items that I am considering getting rid of into another closet in attempt to forget about them.  If that works then I end up bring those items to a consignment shop and make a little cash.

I hate getting rid of stuff.  I have 2 armoires and a decent sized closet, so the idea doesn't even cross my mind until they are all so full that my clothes are getting wrinkled.  At that time, I get rid of everything that is in bad condition or was a really, really trendy item that can't be worked around at all.  I have gettingridofstuffaphobia.  I always fear that I will get rid of something, then wish I had it back.

If I were you, I would definitely keep the older cords since they are in good condition.  You never know when you might buy a top that would actually look better than the older ones or you may just want to wear them to bum around or when it's been a while since you've done the laundry/dry cleaining.

I am bad about getting rid of stuff too.  But lately I've been trying to declutter and I just went through my underwear drawer and its so nice to be able to find stuff in that drawer.  My rule is if its uncomfortable, unflattering, too big, way too small, to junior high/high school ish its gone.  Also if it looks worn or I haven't worn it in a long time its gone.

I'm thinking to put clothes I never wear into a box.  If I never touch that box again, I'll just donate it.  But then again, if I store it in a box, OF COURSE I won't wear it.  Should I take a look at them and plan my outfit for the next week and see what works?  I guess so, since I have the day off
