what do you guys do on valentines day? i am looking for ideas of something fun to do that won't be snarky and anti-romantic, but also where i obviously won't be overwhelmed by gooey couples all night.  it's on a weeknight, so it's not that big of a deal, but i might get sad if i go straight home from work and all of my married and otherwise coupled friends are out on the town.

i was thinking of going rollerblading with a single friend at the beach, but i am looking for other options.  i don't really like going to a bar because it feels too sad and i think it puts me in the bitter anti-love camp (of which i am not a member).  should i go to a movie? help?

I wouldn't go to a movie - it would probably end up being a lot of couples, just like any restaurant you go to on V-Day.  Maybe you could have a movie night with your single girlfriend(s) instead?

I think you should have an ol' fashioned sleepover with your single girlfriends.  My boyfriend is going out of town in a couple weeks, and I am planning on having some of my girlfriends over for the night to drink wine, try lots of new beauty products, and make fun of men.  We are all very excited about it!

i don't know--i feel like a movie night w/other single girls has the potential to turn into a weepy pity-party.  i don't want to do anything that will encourage me or anyone else to dwell on being single.  the other problem is that i have very few single girlfriends left anyway.

maybe i will just live in denial of the holiday altogether and stay in and do homework and not worry about it.

What about renting some funny movies, getting your favorite takeout, your favorite drink, a sinfully bad dessert (basically stuff you can't get away with as much once you're in a relationship), and just kickin' back and have a fun night?

Movies like Legally Blonde, etc. (yes, I know they're cheesy!) always put me in a great mood.

Maybe even splurge on a massage or even just get a pedicure first to destress from the day.  Just make it all about you.

I usually stay home and cry myself to sleep.

I'm only half-joking. I don't know. I definitely think a "girls' night" has the potential to turn into a weep-fest/bitter man-hater event.

I generally just ignore it and often wind up forgetting. Even when I had a boyfriend we rarely did anything for Valentines Day so it's never been important to me. I understand how you feel though. Every year I see delivery men on the subway with huge bouquets and I get a bit sad wondering if I'll be a spinster forever.

What about going out with a guy friend? I did that one year and it was fun. We didn't b.s. about our love lives all night like I might be inclined to do with a girl and at least I felt like "This dude thinks I'm cool. There's hope for me!"

I definitely think ignoring it is the best method though. At least for me doing anything special, even if it's being really self-indulgent, just makes me feel like crap in these situations because I start dwelling on negative things.

I can't believe I'm even posting what I'm doing for Valentine's Day.  I'll just preface this with the fact that I'm INCREDIBLY immature.  Anyways, my friends and I paired off into "valentines" (hence my sex songs post in entertainment).  We're giving each other Valentine's Day presents (I'm giving mine a mix CD of sex songs and a mug that says "I Love Sluts"), and then we're all going to a strip club.

oh, cc--i knew you would understand exactly what i meant! yeah, i don't want to get involved with a bitter man-hater event or a weep-fest.  being alone would be better than that.

i hear you on the subway-flowers thing.  the worst for me is going to be the drive home--there are two ultra-cute and cozy little restaurants right on my corner.  on normal nights when they are packed with groups of friends i get a little pang that i'm not out having a cozy little dinner with cool people, but on v-day it's going to be horrific.  maybe i will just go a different way to avoid it.

the mani-pedi idea is not bad.  that will definitely not be a couple-y spot, and it is something i could do on my own after work.

maddie you're too funny.  while i don't like strip clubs i think everyone should go to one once b/c they're hilarious.

the year b/f last a friend of mine had a dinner party for all her single friends. it was co-ed, so it didn't turn into a weep fest, and quite fun. this year i don't think i'm doing anything since it's on a monday. i'm actually excited b/c i'm hoping that the gym will be less crowded than it normally is.

That sounds like so much fun! I wish I lived in your town for VDay! Where are you getting the mug? I want one! I, too, love sluts.

My best Valentine's Day ever - and I mean EVER - was with my girlfriends. We'd all had some icky guy stuff happen to us in the past year so we had a bonfire (like that Friends episode where they have to call the firemen?). I burned some crappy pics and letters, another girl burned a t-shirt she'd worn home one morning (naughty!), and someone else burned something I can't remember. We ate cheesecake, drank wine, and watched some chick flicks or comedies or some such thing. It was the best! A real bonding time for us girls and the most memorable time any of us had ever had on ooey-gooey love day. And that's saying a lot because I've spent most of my vday's with boys. Never as much fun as spending it with girls.

This year I'll probably go play poker at Fado's with some friends. Hopefully I'll win this time! At least I know all the boys there are single. I'm lookin' to be lucky all night long!

Blubirde, here's the "I Love Sluts" site...

I'm also contemplating the teddy bear.

honey, I LOOOOVE strip clubs. I don't know why. The first time I went I was freaking out, but I ended up not wanting to leave. Some of the kids I'm going with have never been, or never been to one with full nudity so it should be good times.

bumblebee, thanks! I'm sure you were awesome.

I have managed to convince my borderline-man-hating friends to go to this singles event put on by a local radio staion.  Mope at home?  No thanks.  This is my 1st V-day with no significant other.  I can either let that bum me out, or take the opportunity to be single & have a blast.  Hopefully i won't have so much of a blast that I end up drunk calling my ex to tell him just how much fun i did have.  ;)
