Hubs has done it twice, and both times he applied and then flew to the interviews. I did it once too just applying after we'd already moved, but in that case I knew the job would be temporary and didn't care too much what kind of place it was.
Are you in a situation where you could apply ahead of time and schedule any interviews for the same 2 or 3 days, so you could fly out and get them all done? Do you have anyone you know in the area you'll be moving to that could do some scouting/networking for you?

Elle, yes to both of your questions. Although the people I know there don't work in my industry (far from it). But, the good news is, one of them does work in the bf's industry so that makes it super easy for him. We don't want to try to survive on one income, though.
gingembre1, I'll be looking at the creative side of advertising or marketing communications. Either working at an agency or an in-house ad agency doing either copywriting or design (preferably design), or at a company (without an in-house agency) in marketing communications (focusing on the creative side of marketing).
I'm at a level in my career where I could be in a management position (marcom manager for example).
I think networking will definitely be key. do you have a college alumni network you could use at a starting point? maybe contact people in the area that are working in an industry you are interested in.
I actually moved cross country almost two years ago but did so with my company so my experience wouldn't be too helpful..
I was planning on checking with them once I'm started into the semester. We aren't planning to move before winter anyway, so that gives me time to get acquainted with the school and its career center.
jettie, I do have an alumni network, but I never even thought of that. Thanks!
I second the apply and try to schedule a few interviews in 2-3 days. Sometimes it's hard because hiring managers may not want to wait.
My hubby and I planned 5 day trip before we moved and scheduled two days of informational interviews/networking opportunities and 3 dyas of house hunting. We were really surprised at how receptive people were to meet with us that we had just called "blindly". My hub was an account manager for a creative agency, and his meetings led to consulting work and now he has his own (very small) company.
Have you looked into joining the local AdFed or PRSA? Ours have job postings and job banks - I am guessing the ones in SF are huge.
