Thanks alb and everyone else for your good wishes.  Alb, I live in the district (actually just a few blocks away from DC) in a Victorian rowhouse.  My husband and I both work downtown (I walk to work, which is *great*) and we intend to stick around for the time being.

As for childcare, I am still weighing options.  Check out the forums on www.dcurbanmom.com for some useful info and recommendations on nannies.  In the short term, I am planning to take at least 6 mos. off from work (and possibly up to a year) and then return part-time.  I am fortunate to have a fair amount of flexibility in terms of work and whether/when to return.  If I were to go with daycare, I'd definitely choose a place close to my office or my husband's.  There are a few places in the vicinity which, while definitely not inexpensive, have gotten good reviews from some other mothers I know.

My mother lives in the Virginia suburbs so she is going to help me out when the twins first arrive -- I am going to need other household help though to clean, do laundry, cook a little, etc. b/c I don't want my mom doing any of that stuff.  So I better get on that.

and fortuitously enough, my husband's firm is looking into providing on-site daycare beginning this summer, so when we learn more, that might be a way to go ....

Beep--Thank you so much for the link.  I am definitely going to check that out right away.  You are very fortunate to be able to take 6 mos or more time off from work.  It's great that your employer is accommodating your situation!  I am planning on taking the maximum amt at my job (and by law), just about 3 mos.  I am really *hoping* that my employer will allow me to return to work PT, but I haven't brought it up just yet.  If not, I am going to try to find a new PT job while on mat. leave.  BTW If you (or any other dc girls) happen to hear of any PT jobs for attorneys in the District (or suburbs even) please let me know!  Oh and the option of taking your baby to the daycare in your hubby's office building would be great, I hope that works out for you.  Take care!

Alb, I am an attorney as well so if I hear of part-time opportunities I'll let you know (you can pm me if you want with more details about what type of work you are looking  for).  I have been at my firm for a while and I happen to work in a highly specialized, in-demand area, hence the flexibility with work.  It's nice to have a place to exchange info.
