Question about e-rings
Permalink Closed

Ok so I have to really make up my mind on what I want since the bf is graduating next may and I agreed to re-open this discussion this fall (the getting married discussion). I kinda have always had this rule with him that I want us both to be out of school and have jobs before getting engaged but we are so close and we're coming up to 5 years in a few weeks so I'm thinking of bending the rule slightly and saying he can ask a few months before graduation (like starting next Jan).

So he has the money for an engagement ring and has a jeweler to work with so I'm assuming it is going to take a few months to make a ring and order the stones and such so I really need to figure out what I want or what sort of ring I want - And he keeps telling me that too.

The ring I've liked for a few years is this one:

but I'm afraid I won't always like it. Plus I just inherited a diamond and saphire ring from my grandmother on white gold (The ring is in a diamond shape and not entirely similar to this but its pretty close) so then I'd have 2 really similar rings.

I mean I know there is the traditional one:

and its pretty it just seems plain to me.

So...Am I just being too picky and not going to care once I get one? Did you pick yours?  What does it look like?

If you are thinking of having the ring custom-made, I think you should be involved b/c the whole point of doing that is getting exactly what you want.  If you are thinking of getting a ready-made ring, I would suggest going ring shopping together so you can try on different styles with different sized/shaped diamonds and see what you like best.  Then, he can pick one for you having what you like in mind.

This is my diamond and ring:

Except we had my diamond set on an angle, because that's the way it kept falling (see how the prongs are set?) when I was trying it on and we decided we liked it better that way.  If you go to www.shaneco.com you can try different rings with different diamonds to see what you like.

This is the ring that I would love to have, but if I do not get it I will not be upset.  I trust my bf to pick out something that I will love.

I thought I knew what I would want (something vintagey and antique-looking) but I am so glad my husband got me something different. My ring is very simple and modern and suits me so much better. I did know I wanted white gold, which I got. This is my ring:

Also, tell him to go with color/clarity over size. Even if it's smaller than you'd like at first, you will be much happier with a clearer, smaller stone than a cloudy larger one. (This is especially important if you are choosing a shape other than round for your stone.)

Moral of the story: I would give him a general guideline (i.e. if you like white/yellow metals, shape of the stone, etc) but I think it's much sweeter when they pick something out for you.

PS- I love sapphires like nobody's business, but I don't like them on wedding rings or e-rings. A co-worker of mine has one, and when you look at her ring, all you see is the sapphire part -- the color really detracts from the diamond, IMO.

Good luck! I am so excited for you!

PS - Lmonet, is your ring from ShaneCo too? I loooooove ShaneCo.

I am also a big fan of getting your e-ring from a non-mall jeweler, btw. Their metals are usually heavier and their care programs better. JMO.

Yup!  Do you have one near you?  They do have an awesome care program, though I do wish they were able to customize.  They have a trade up policy too, so if you ever want to upgrade your diamond, they give you what you paid for your first one toward the upgrade.  They also have a nice insurance/replacement policy.

i never thought i was a diamond girl until i got my ring - they are so beautiful!  i would go try a few different shapes and bandwidths on so you can see how they look in person.

my ring was a total surprise, and it's just a solitaire - modest round stone on a thin platinum band.  it suits me pretty well.  i don't know if i would have picked a solitaire, but it would have definitely been in my top 3.  it was a romantic surprise.  i like that my ring is super sparkle-y - round stones are the best for sparkle, IMHO.  i think princess cuts are really nice as well, but i recently discovered my absolute favorite, an oval stone:

I just think it has the simplicity of a solitaire but is unique because of the shape.  It also looks as if it would have good sparkle.  I don't normally care for 3 stone rings, but i think they look awesome if they are ovals.

re sapphires, like halleybird i love them but not so much in wedding rings/bands.  i tried on a sapphire/diamond wedding band and somehow it just didn't look right.

anyway, sorry for the long post, but basically, just take your time & def. don't be shy about going to a store and trying some on...have fun!

I agree with what everyone has said about going and trying on various shapes and styles.  You will never really know what you want until you actually try it on your finger.  Try on different shaped stones, different settings (definitely try on both a plain solitaire setting and a more ornate setting), and different widths of bands.  I think you'll be surprised at what you like when you actually see it on your finger.

In my case, my husband had some idea of what I wanted but wasn't sure, so he got me a solitaire - a gorgeous radiant cut stone with a very thin platinum band.  And he said that whenever I was ready, I could take the stone out of the setting and put it in a setting that I chose.  I wore it as a solitaire ring for about 10 months, then found my dream setting (very vintage-y) and had the stone put in that.  To be honest with you, I think I like it equally in both settings - in both cases, it was the meaning behind it all that meant the most!

Definitely go and try on and figure out what shapes you like. I personally think it has to do with the shape of your cuticles but that is my own crazy theory. My ring is not the exact one I fell in love with but it is actually better and I love it. K had issues wiht the center stone so it took a lot longer than he planned
