I just made my first appt to try on dresses this weekend and I'm a bit apprehensive. Does anyone have any tips on what to wear/bring/ask to make this trip as productive as possible? Will I get an employee to help me the whole time or is it like a regular store where you pick some dresses and go try them on?

It depends on where you go, if you go to a nicer upscale boutique they will pretty much just bring you in a room and bring you dresses. Have a general amount you want to spend so they aren't bringing you $9,000 dresses when your budget is $5,000.
Every place I went supplied me with what I needed, shoes, a strapless bra that sucks it all as well.
Have some pics from magazines with you so she has a general idea of what you want as well. my best advice is keep your mind open. The women brought me exactly what I asked for and I didn't like them but when i asked her advice and gave her a general feel of what I wanted I ened up liking her suggestions better. They know body types and what looks best on them.
Most important do not let them talk you into a dress you do not love. One place I went to she insistd on bringing me dresses she loved and I hated and if I didn't like it she got mad at me. Don't be afraid to speak up and dont bring too many people with you. Too many opinions just becomes confusing.
Good luck and let us know if you find something you love!

Thanks girlies! I'm just going to David's Bridal, so no big deal. But I didn't want to walk in there completely clueless! I'll let you know how it goes!

I'm not taking anyone with me - will the salesgirl take pics of me in dresses? I heard they don't like that b/c people copy dresses that way . . . ? Should I be taking someone with me on the first trip? My fiance wanted to go, but obviously that's not allowed !

A lot of places won't let you take pictures until you buy the dress, I think David's is that way but I'm not positive. To answer your question about having one person just helping you, when I went to David's I was assigned a woman, who helped me find dresses and set me up in a fitting room, but she was also helping a few other people at the same time. I think it just depends on how busy they are. They will have everything you need (bra, shoes, crinoline, etc), but if you already have a bra you want to wear, bring that. Since it's just your first time going, I think it's fine to go by yourself. When you get more serious, it's nice to have a second opinion, especially since after a while, the dresses start to look all alike. My final piece of advice is to keep an open mind. I went in to my dress shopping thinking no strapless and no long train, and I ended up with a strapless dress with a pretty long train. It's hard to tell what looks best on you, unless you try on a lot of different styles (even the ones you think you will hate). Good luck and have fun! I think dress shopping was the best part of wedding planning!
Davids does not let you take pictures until you buy the dress. The good news is you can preview shop on the davids bridal website. If you see styles that interest you write down the number. Also one thing to note, my sister got her gown for way under her budget at Davids then she had her seamstress customize it
