Bikram Yoga Anyone?
Permalink Closed

I have finally found a Bikram yoga studio I like with classes I can afford. Lately though everyone I talk to says Bikram yoga is bad for your health. Something about the heated room being bad?? The last four people I talked to all said it wasn't so good. Does anyone know about this?

If you are young and healthy and fit, it shouldn't cause you any problems.  If you have a heart condition or high blood pressure, I can understand why the heat/humidity wouldn't be good.

do these people elaborate as to why it is supposedly "bad" for you?  like LMonet said, there are probably certain medical conditions that the environment of a bikram class could aggrevate.

i have not heard anything about it being "bad" for you, and if i were you i would ask the people you talked to for an explaination and take it with a grain of salt.  people run around all the time making rash generalizations like this that are often based on little or no truth, or on one study that was performed in norway on ten 62 yr old male carpenters (get my drift?).

The only way I've heard its bad for you is that the sweat and hot temperatures breed bacteria so its easy to spread germs/get sick, etc.

I think as long as you wash up afterwards and are healthy you should be fine.

I don't do Bikram, but the yoga I do is in a non ventilated room with ALOT of people so gets extremely hot and Bikram-like... I love sweating that much- I feel like I really sweat all the toxins out of my body.

ugh, u mean people try to sweat more on purpose?  i do my yoga video in my apartment w/ the windows open in as little clothing as possible cuz it gets so damn hot.  i can't imagine having another body in there, let alone no ventilation & the heater on!!  i'm all for working out, but i sweat enough as it is.

I know, its gross, but its so good for you to sweat... Also, when your body is heated it  becomes much more flexible! Its amazing actually.

I've actually done it a couple of times and it's very challenging. The first time I did, I loved it. The second time, I could barely do the whole thing! I had to sit out and rest. I feel great when I leave from there. I haven't been there lately because of the cold weather. I hate coming out of there and into this cold weather. Oh, you sweat alot. I haven't heard anything bad about it. The people who have been going for awhile seem to be in really good shape and they are really flexible.
