I found out yesterday that I am Lactose Intolerant- I have suspected it for a while, but yesterday it was confirmed. This is pretty bad news for me because Milk and water are about the only things I drink. I have talked to a doc. about this, but I just want to hear from you guys. What do you drink instead of milk? I drink soy milk, but that doens't taste like milk to me. It is good, but I want something that taste more like milk. I know there are medications you can take, so you can still eat dairy. Thanks!

There are products that you can find it almost all grocery stories that are real milk, minus the lactose. One brand I can think of off the top of my head is Lactaid. However, the best version I have tasted (the one that tasted most like normal milk) was a grocery store version. I think the milk was from albertsons, though i cannot recall. You will find this type of milk in cartons as opposed to jugs.
My husband and best friend are both lactose intolerant. They both take Lactaid before they eat anything dairy, and it works very well for them. My husband HAS to take it because he will get serious stomach issues if he doesn't. My best friend can sometimes get away with it, if there isn't too much dairy with the food.
My husband uses the Lactaid milk, and he says it tastes like regular milk, but he only uses it with his ceral, so I don't know how it tastes by itself.
Other than that though, as long as he takes the Lactaid, he can eat whatever dairy he wants.
You can get them in caplets or chewables, and prefers the chewables over the caplets.
I am lactose intolerant and I LOVE milk. I find the Lactaid milk to be too sugary, but Organic Valley Lactose Free milk is great. I buy it at my local health food store, but my sister found it in Fla at the Publix. I have even had people drink it at my house and say it doesn't taste like lactose free milk, so I don't think my tastebuds have just become accustomed to it.
I also buy the lactase pills. I find that the Lactaid brand pills are overpriced, so when I get out of the city and actually can find a walmart I stock up on their generic pills which work well. I prefer the "ultra" one pill dose because I really don't want to be taking 5 or 6 pills before I dig into some ice cream. The ultra version also comes in a little wrapper so you can stick them in your pocket.
mckenke, have you been able to find the generic pills in chewables? I hate shelling out so much money on the Lactaid when I know they generics are much better priced, but he will only take the chewables.
I have never looked for the chewables, but usually when I look on the shelf at walmart there seems to be an equivalent of every sort of lactaid pill. I feel a bit weird becoming such a big proponent of walmart, but many of the stores don't have a generic version of lactaid even when they have a generic version of everything else. So, I would say try there. Sorry I can't be more helpful.
