Need some feedback (came out long)

Hi.
This is a half vent and half request of opinions.
Here's the background.

Last april, my boss called me into his office and told me I have to look around for a new job, since from Oct there'll be no money for me. He had said to me before (end of 2006, I have the emails) that he had money for me until sep 2009. This is the same guy that told me when I was in USA, I could come back to Italy and start working with him on May 2007, so I told my ex boss not to renew my visa, and then in Feb, when it was too late for visa, told me he couldn't hire me in May, I had to wait 'til Oct.

Then he asks me where I am going to search for a job. Here are his replies:
University - there's no way you can get a job in the university, beacuse you know how it works, only people who have a strong "saint in paradise" (that's how we call it) can get the job -PS I don't have any saints.
CNR (National council of research) - no, you won't like it, it's a big mess, they are slow in hiring.
Private companies - no, they don't need you, here in Italy companies don't do research, just quality control, so why should they hire you, who have a PhD, when they can hire a kid with a 3-years degree and pay him/her WAY less?

His conclusion is I should go abroad. I came back from US last year, so I don't really feel like going abroad.
Then, he says -I'll tell you if I hear of some positions in some companies that may be of interest to you, of course!
And 2 days later he goes to a meeting with several companies in the biotechnological field WITHOUT SAYING A WORD!!! We found out by pure chance.

So I start looking for a job, and something nice and pretty comes out. They called me on Tue to tell me that I have been selected, I should start working on the 18th of July, and on the 22nd I should leave to l'Aia (where some EU offices are) for a series of lessons about what I am going to work on. This is exciting news, as the salary is much better, but especially, I have much more benefits (that is, more than 0).
I go tell him yesterday, and he trows a tantrum.

He says I am unreliable, I have to finish the work here, I should have told these people I have other engagements and I can't start working before Oct, what have I been doing there until now (working, I replied), that is not a parking lot for people looking for jobs, I am not a reliable person (again), it's true he had told me to look around, but I should have found something starting in Oct.

In all that I was trying telling him that my notebook is in order and anyone can pick up where I left, that part of the work is done it could be publishable, that I wanted to still be in touch with him to write these publications, and so on.
But he cut me repeating I am unreliable, and also told me he is not publishing my paper. I think there is enough material to be published, he thinks not, it's missing 4 days of experiments (!) I should have carried in Berlin at the end of the month.
And I am sure he's gonna take out my name from 2 other papers too. Although I have worked on them 'til yesterday.

So, today I am going to talk to human resources to ask how to write my resignation letter.
But I am afraid he's not gonna pay me for the half month I worked, not gonna publish my stuff, and today ask me what I am doing there and send me home.

Hope I made sense, there's so much I wrote above...
I am going to try talk to him today or tomorrow, but I don't have much hope. He just cuts you while you are talking and goes away, or closes his office door while you are talking.
Yes, he's 4 mental years.

I am sorry that if my paper doesn't get published, it's really as if I was parked there for 9 months. It's a shame b/c it's a nice work, and complete. It's modification of microbubbles so that, once injected in the blood, they reach the cancer site rather than healthy tissues, then release the anticancer drug.
And I am sure in some months he'll pull the data out and publish it wothout my name - he's like that.

So, my request is for some advice on how to deal with this situation (or better, this boss).
I am not sad, just a little angry and disappointed. But I am too happy for the new job to have him ruin my day!smile

PS it's also my b-day today, and he won't definitely mess up with my day today!! I won't let him.

Your boss is doink. No. Question.

But congrats on the new job! For the rest, this sounds pretty technical. Is there a lawyer available to walk you through the resignation process and payment for time worked, as well as credit for the papers which were already published under your name? What sort of contract/employee handbook/procedures did you start working under?

Happy birthday!  That dude is rather immature, unprofessional!  Obviously there is no getting through to him so I'd leave it to HR to handle things.

Thanks Dizzy
I talked to HR this morning before coming to work, and she said boss has to write a letter telling I am not working starting on the 16th. She said I am gonna be paid 'till the 15th, so the salary issue should be all set.
He seems much more reasonable today, asked me if I had prepared some things that should me sent to Sweden -of course I did start, and I should be dome by Tue.
I should talk to him about the paper later.
These papers have not yet been published (we are writing and "fixing" them) so he can take out my name as much as he wants. It's totally up to him, and I should try to have him reason a little...

I am working for the italian industry promotion agency. I am gonna take care of patents, check if they are scientifically sound and new. The lessons I'll be taken are at the epo (european patent office), and I am all excited b/c this trip at the very start will be a chance to know well my co-workers too.

First of all, you are SUCH a smartie, ico! cancer drugs, patents, trips to sweden and oh yeah a PhD! Congratulations on the new job, they are very lucky to have you!

As for the boss, the way he went off was completely uncalled for. Hopefully he realizes it, calms down and gives you credit on the papers. If not, he's a world class a$$ and a thief to boot. And hopefully karma will come around and bite him.

And HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!!!!!!!

Happy birthday! It sounds like things are on the right track. I know it stinks to feel like nine months of work will be wasted (or uncredited), but my guess is it happens so often in your line of work that you have to accept and move on - just like you're doing. Good luck with the new job! Sounds exciting.

Sour grapes for sure - is there anything you can do to make sure he doesn't take your name off? If he is being more reasonable now, can you just ask him?

Congrats on your new job, this sounds like it is going to be a great experience for you!
