humidifiers/vaporizers

Okay--people have suggested that I get a humidifier for my bedroom b/c the heat is so dry it's causing me to have congestion and other respiratory issues.  I've never used a humidifier and don't know anything about them.  I've also heard vaporizers are good.  Which is better and do any of you know of a good one of either than I should consider?  Hubby and I are going to Bed Bath and Beyond tonight & I'd like to know what features to look for.  Any guidance would be greatly appreciated!

i think the new rage in humidifiers are those ones with a uv light that kills germs... so not to make the newly humidified air a perfect breeding ground for germs. i've seen them at bb&b.

Yes, that's the kind I got for Christmas and it's really great. It's called a slant/fin humidifier. This is the one:

There's some good information here for you. Excellent for allergy sufferers. I don't think it came from this particular store, you can get them other places. Not sure about BB&B.

Thanks, Gruiz!  For some reason my work computer won't let me click on the link, but I printed out your post and will look it up when I get home.  It sounds like a good one!

You'll almost certainly use this a lot after the baby is born (a lot of parents use them in the kid's bedroom when s/he has a cold) so if I were you I'd go with one of the germ-killers ones.

One thing to consider is the cleaning of the unit.  I had a humidifier I ended up returning because it was such a pain in the rear.  It required daily cleaning; everything needed to be emptied and rinsed once a day (it took me about 10 minutes which I considered annoying), plus a weekly cleaning with bleach (took me about 20 minutes, plus drying time).  I think they have some self-cleaning models available.

That's really good to know, thanks.  I definitely don't have the time or patience for that.  Thanks also Mia and Dot for your help.

Gruiz--do you have to clean the one you have?

I think the instructions said to clean it once a week, but I've been using it for a month and haven't cleaned it yet (oops). I think you need to see how heavy your water is in minerals. If you get a lot of mineral buildup, you'll probably need to clean it more often. It does have a little mineral filter (which I found doesn't last the 3 months that the instructions claim), to keep most of the stuff out of the actual machine. So, the filter in combination with the UV light really keeps the "bad stuff" out of the water and air. You'll also have to replace the UV light bulb, but I'm not sure how often...ours is still going strong.

I've been through a few humidifiers, and this one is really easy to use. There's no giant filter that gets all moldy and gross, and you don't have to clean it every day!

Great, thanks.  I'll probably go with that one or something similar.
