We never really do anyting more then go out to dinner on V-day, maybe he will buy me flowers, or maybe I will get him candies, we don't make a big deal out of it.

I know I'm not much help, but we have been together for a while so we try to make other days more romantic and not play into the BIG one which has turned into a inflated "holiday".

Too muss stress there.

My b/f thinks it is to commericalized also, so he said no gifts, which i am okay with. I really don't care about gifts, but since he is great to me year round, and this is pretty much dubbed a girl's hoilday i want to do something for him.

Hey Kel did you see the one thing I found and posted in the general chat area (wrong area I know). Its a giant fortune cookie you can have decorated any way you want and you can put in your own message. Its different. I think the bf and I are just doing dinner as usual and I might get him the fortune cookie or a dvd or shirt. Not sure yet. Its our 5 year anniversary on the 11th also which makes it hard.

I'm going to sorta hijack this thread for a moment. Do you think a slow cooker is a bad gift for a guy? I was thinking about getting that as a present since he works all day or goes to school all day and gets tired and doesn't feel like cooking. So he could throw the recipe in the pot in the morning and it would be cooked when he got home. Good idea or stay away? Its kinda in that area where you don't buy women appliances for gifts but since its something he could use I don't know.

lsu, i think it's a great idea. he'll appreciate the thought and use it everyday. and in general i think guys like gadgets/appliances as gifts. i remember once i bought a boyfriend a phone for xmas and he was really grateful and thought it was sweet that i remembered he'd mentioned he'd wanted a cordless phone. so go for it!

lsu - i think appliances are great gifts for men! for xmas, my bf got a kitchenaid mixer from his mom one year and i gave him a food processor another year. he loves them (as do i). i guess the only question would be... would he use it? if he's mentioned that he wants one or that he could use one... i would definitely get it! i feel like most guys like foods that come out of slow cookers.. e.g. beef stew.. roasts... etc. i think it's a very masculine gift!

as for my bf, i dont think i'm going to do anything this year. we are trying to be good about spending money (since we just bought an apt)... so i think they most we would do is go out to eat (if even that!). last year my bf made me dinner from a martha stewart magazine. it was really cute because he copied it exactly! another year he gave me mariebelle chocolates (which was so nice!). i usually give him an albumor something sappy like that or something to eat as well. i also usually bake something for him as well. i will probably make him some cookies this year. i will post of picture of them when i do. i got a new heart-shaped tarte tin that would be perfect for these chocolate caramel tarts i love to make.

Well he didn't exactly ask for it but if I gave it to him he'd use it since he commutes to school on MWF and is there from 9am till 7pm and skips dinner often. Now I just have to figure out what to look for and which one to get.

so i just started dating this guy (our 2nd date is tonight!) and if we r still dating by Vday it'll be a month. i've never been w/ anyone on Vday before & wondering what to expect... is it customary for girls to give guys stuff? what would i get a guy i barely know? i hate that, it's like when ur w/ a guy for a short period of time & he just so happens to have a bday! it's so awkward!

HeatherLynn - this recipe is by Claudia Fleming who used to work at the Gramercy Tavern. She has the most amazing dessert cookbook. I love to make things from it... I think she has the best taste in desserts. Anyway, in her book (it's not mentioned in the link to Martha Stewart), she sometimes tops these tarts (which are REALLY rich) with a tiny sprinkling of rock salt. She recommends it for people who like things like chocolate covered pretzels and such....

How about getting him a dvd or something small like that. I know what you are going through. I had just gone on my first date with my bf 3 days before v-day. He got me a flower and took me to dinner for our first v-day.

I agree a dvd or a cd would be a good non personal gift if you guys are still together.

LSU, I think the crockpot is a great gift and since he'll use it frequently he'll always remember your sweet gesture to keep him well fed.

And Esquiress, PLEASE post that chocolate carmel recipe, it sounds yummy!

thanks for the suggestions... too bad he belongs to netflix so has every dvd under the sun & i don't really know his taste in music, but i get the idea... i never knew vday was a gift exchange type thing... i mean i thought a guy just got a girl flowers & dinner & that was that. good thing i checked in here!

My bf anD i have been together 3 years so we don't make a big deal either but I think I will probably bake him some cookies and cook him something he would like. He will be getting gifts on the 15th anyway since that's his 23rd b-day!

i got the butthead 2 expensive ties, cologne & aftershave from Zegna while in LA. so he's done.

now me, i'm hoping to get the ring. i'm not going to freak out if it doesn't happen.

it's our first "married" V-day, but we are trying to buy a new house, so I don't think we're doing much. I think I'll get him a CD or something like that. We're not really that into Valentine's Day anyway.

We are going to call V-day a completely overrated holiday, watch DVDs, and stay inside while chaos ensues around us.

Last year we tried to go out to eat and make it a party night or something and it was a complete disaster. We tried to go out to dinner with another couple we're friends with. Except that the guy's parents were in town and we didn't want to feel like we were chaperoned. They spent four hours driving all over LA trying to find a place to eat since they didn't make reservations. And then I started crying because I was having a fat day, among other things. We ended up eating a frozen pizza and going through the box of chocolates he got me. He also got what he calls my first and last bouquet of roses (since I have the brownest thumb alive).

We've been dating for so long (almost 3 1/2 years) that it feels weird for us to pull out the romantic stops on V-day. Quite frankly, the only day BF is really really romantic is my birthday. And vice versa.

Plus my BF doesn't want new clothes (needs to figure out what his job will be before he lets me go crazy getting him a new wardrobe), gets CDs free from other people, hates cologne (perfers eau de natural and is sensitive to strong smells), hates sweet stuff and in general is seriously attached to what he has so I just honestly cannot be bothered to replace said items because he won't use them.

I did buy him a DVD though, Curb Your Enthusiasm season 3. Sadly, he was there when I bought it. He bought me The Office season 2 and the epilogue.
