My year of "too-blond" hair has caught up with me, and for the first time in my life I have some minor breakage and a few split ends. I have a trim appointment to take care of the split ends (I'm trying to grow my hair longer than shoulder length), but does anyone have suggestions to bring the shine and softness back? I need a new hair care regimen. TIA!
You need some deep conditioning treatments, it's probably a good idea to have at least the first one done in your salon. They can be done at home, I like Biolage products and can't remember the exact name but it an intensive rehydrating conditioner in a tube.
I slather it on thick and work it well through the ends then leave it for about 30 mins or so, wearing a shower cap is also good because it helps lock in the heat.
I'm a huge fan of the kms silker line. It doesn't weigh hair down (I have fine hair, and that's a problem with glosses) but it adds silkiness and shine. My hair was looking very dry and damaged before I started using this about five months ago. If you have fine, easily damaged hair that can't handle heavy glosses, it's perfect.
Kerastase shampoo and conditioner and Redken - oooh - I forget the name but it involves the word "soft" - maybe "So Soft"? They're great - the Kerastase is pricey but worth it, imo, for dry/damaged hair.

Another good deep conditioner is Aussie 3 minute miracle deeeep. You can buy it at any drugstore and it's relatively cheap - $3 or 4. My hair problems are similar to yours (split ends, breakage) and this left my hair feeling softer and looking shinier than it had in months!
Mia, the Redken line you are referring to is All Soft--I have tried this line and it is good stuff!!
I have been doing hair repair for the past year. I used to let me hair air dry and then used a flat iron to straighten. Once I realized that the over-use of the flat iron was causing my hair major damage I started to do this routine:
use a moisturizing/repairing shampoo
deep conditioner
after showering, apply leave in conditioner and a small amount of smoothing cream to blowdry
then I did most of my styling by blowdrying and only used the flat iron to smooth
PLUS when I did use a flat iron I would use a heat protecting shine spray
Also, once a week I would use an oil treatment to my hair and I go about 3 days without washing my hair.
My hair is doing great, very soft and shiny!!
Also, is your hair dresser using bleach? Maybe you can try going a bit darker blonde. Regular hair cuts also help.
Thanks for all the replies ladies. I have fine hair, but a ton of it. I know it is a combination of the highlights and the straightening iron. Over the Spring/Summer, I was very blond, so it was bleach, but now I've been getting a "color highlight". I am trying to grow my hair out, and luckily my hair grows very quickly, so I have been keeping up on trims, etc.
I think the main problem is that I use the straightening iron every day and I have only been doing that the past 9 months or so. Unfortunately, I can't go a day without washing my hair, because it would look like an oil slick on top of my head!
Anyway, I am going to try out some of your product suggestions, keep getting trims and try to curtail the use of the straightening iron, while resisting the urge to bleach my hair.

That is exactly what I was going to recommend. I love Aussie! I use it weekly. It works great, and my hair is sooo soft and silky afterwards. Plus I think it smells really good! I've also used good 'ol VO5 Hot Oil Treatment which also works well.
