I'm bored with my current magazine subscriptions plus they are going to run out soon, so I am in need of some recomendations.
Okay, I'm looking for a magazine that deals with fashion/style, but has a bit of edginess, conscience, intelligence, reality, etc. I know that is asking for a bit much, but I'm tired of reading about 101 ways to please a man, how celebrities achieve a natural look with 50 makeup items put on by a makeup artist, and affordable looks for under $1000. So if anyone has any recs, I would greatly appreciate it!! TIA!
i don't know what you're subscribing to now that isn't thrilling you, but i think Jane and Marie Claire might fit your description of what you want. They both do articles about "real" stuff, things happening in the world, not just fluffy fashion articles. i would say Jane has the "edginess" you want, or at least it tries to. i personally don't love either of those mags, but i think that's because i just got bored with them too.
the magazine i love and found because i too was bored with my regular ones, is Elle. i cannot recommend it enough. it has real journalism, with some silly advice columns that are entertaining, as well as movie, book, music, and art recommendations, as well as a good dose of fashion. it feels much more intelligent than InStyle, &tc.
oh, something else...there's a magazine that just started a few months ago called Suede (http://www.essence.com/essence/suede). it's a sort of urban-influenced fashion magazine, that says it's for "women of color" but i think anyone could get fashion ideas from it. i've only seen one issue of myself though.
i really like elle too. it's my favorite mag. i also enjoy suede, it can be a tad ghetto fab, but the fashion layouts are really inventive, and they have an excellent hair care section including contact info. for salons. nylon is a pretty interesting read too.
yes! i was looking over suede at hudson news! i really liked some of the photo spreads. they were really more adventurous than alot of the bigger magazines.
ugh, i have to say i've been getting into the lifestyle/home magazines lately:
real simple organic style
i do like elle. i also love foreign mags but they are so $$$ i just look at them in the book store.
yeah i would say definitely check out elle, although it's pretty mainstream.
nylon is good, as is paper magazine, although paper is more nyc-centric. what about interview? all of these are a bit edgy and don't have much (or any) dating, sex, etc. stuff. they are all celeb-heavy, however it's done in a different way than cosmo or marie clare.
my favorite is elle, too. it has an older and more sophisticated target audience, so the articles seem to be better-researched and i find the book and music recommendations to be pretty good, as well as the fashion coverage--but it doesn't get pretentious, like i sometimes think vogue can be.
have you seen flaunt magazine? i don't know if it's widely available or just in la because it is published here, but it's pretty good--similar to nylon in style and content, i think. they usually have a celeb cover, but it's typically someone a little bit edgy, and their fashion photography is interesting and different.
I know we have a lot of lucky or former lucky readers here. I got both lucky and shop etc for my train ride to nyc on friday night. I breezed through lucky in like 10-20 minutes and the rest of the ride (was on the local so about 40 minutes) was spent reading shop etc which i found to have more interesting articles and a wider range of clothing. It may be for an older crowd but I was drawn to it.
I'll have to jump on the Elle bandwagon here. I absolutely love it! The articles are well written and often witty and the fashion coverage is superb. I still like Lucky, but it doesn't have much content. It's more of a look book. I have been annoyed with InStyle recently. It seems so damn pretentious. I used to love this magazine, but now, I don't even buy every issue. Definitely check out Elle.
i really like loulou (http://louloumagazine.com) it's canada's answer to lucky magazine with a lot more inventive (although hard to find if you live in the states) options.

I will echo the Elle sentiments. It's one of my very favorites.
I am currently in love with Shop Etc. I am so glad I didn't renew my Lucky subscription, it's just like the original Lucky only glossier and better.
I'll have to pick up an issue of Suede. I didn't pick up an issue because my sister told me it was horrible. I subscribe to Essence and I hope it's a urban fashion spinoff. Sounds fun.
