M.Monkey, Maddie, Baglady -- I quit yearbook!
Permalink Closed

(after this year)

Just talked to my principal today. The book is getting too huge (350+ pages next year) for me to do in addition to newspaper.  I am also giving up broadcast...so I will just teach intro to journalism and newspaper next year (and maybe an English class).

I am sad because I love my yearbook kids to death, and I really do enjoy yearbook. But I will look forward to having a somewhat normal schedule (more like 55 hours per week instead of 70).

Any ideas on how to break it to my students? They love me. I am gonna wait (at my principal's request) until after registration.

Oh no!  But I totally understand why you did.  I can't imagine doing both.  My yearbook advisor actually had absolutely no part in the yearbook, but the newspaper advisor put in so much time I can't imagine if you were actually doing your job in both.  Actually my Junior year we had a different, really good advisor, but she got laid off and we recovered.  I would be honest with your kids and explain to them why you are quitting.  My Senior year advisor (the one who didn't do anything) was somewhat of a newlywed with a new baby, so we understood why he was never there.  I'm sure your kids will be equally understanding, although disappointed.  Tell them you think someone else could do a better job because they could throw themselves into it more.  Plus you'll still be at the school so they can show you what they're working on and if they have any burning questions next year they can ask you (although I wouldn't tell them that or they may swamp you).  I think you defintely made the best decision for yourself and maybe you can really enjoy newspaper now.
