First, let me just say I nailed an 'A' in my Calc II class last semester! Yeeha!
I was trying to decide whether to take Calc III next semester, but I knew I didn't need it for transfer (but thought I needed it for my degree) so wasn't sure if I should take it now to avoid memory failure problems in the future if I need it for my degree or what. Anyway, I think I will be going to Rutgers for convenience sake, and they changed their degree programs and mine is now gone (it was microbiology/geneology). I was never really happy with that major choice, but was lost as to which one would be right for me, so I just kind of settled on that one. Because it was no longer an option I was forced to re-evaluate things. I am really interested in every aspect of evolution whether it be cellular development, evolution of culture/language/whatever. So I thought anthropology would be a good field, but honestly didn't like the powder puff course requirements. So I thought I would major in anthropology and minor in biology, but after talking to my SO he made me realize that just doesn't make sense. So I figured out that I would just major in biology (so I can have what I really want - a bachelor's in science), and minor in Anthropology (which has a branch for evolution/biology at Rutger's) so I can still divulge my passion.
I know you all know how good it feels when you finally feel satisfied with what you are going to do (hello? I am 27! so this took me a long time) with your future, so you'll understand why I couldn't help sharing my joy!
PS. I decided to skip Calc III since I have now a lot more classes to take before transfer, so I don't want to waist any time.
P.P.S. Can someone PLEASE reassure me that I will not be old and unattractive (not physically, employment wise) by time I finish my studies (early 30's). I am so worried I will be overlooked for the young wipper-snapper's by time I finish school.
drew, that's so awesome! i definitely think the bio major is a good choice and then you can just use the anthro major to focus your interest more. do you think you're going to continue on and go to grad school when you finish?
I am almost embarressed to admit this because it is so unconventional, but my goal is to earn my Phd by time I am 50, so yes I definately want to go to grad school.
Dreww, I will be 32 when I graduate so we can ridethis boat together. I think our practical experience is worth it's weight in gold so when we do finally have our degrees, watch out world. We will be dangerous (employment wise).
I am really amazed by what you're doing. One of my closest friends from college, my roommate of many years, went back to school about a year after we graduated. She is a HUGE animal lover and always wanted to be vet but never had the drive to major in science when she was in college (although I can't explain the major in economics! wtf? anyway). Well she's doing undergrad courses now so that she can apply to vet school in the future. When I think about what's she doing and going after what she's wanted her whole life, it really makes me feel so inspired. I think she has alot of guts to go back to school esp. when she was doing well in a small boutique law firm right out of college.
So anyway, I think most people see going back to school for what you want as a huge sign of motivation and determination... and definitely not as a negative.
Also now that I think of it, after freshman year, I took a summer class at NYU. One of my classmates, who actually turned out to be this super-cool fun guy, was 34 going on his senior year and planning on going to graduate school for a phd in history I think. He wanted to be a teacher. So anyway, it may be unconventional but it seems like from just these posts here that there are alot of people going for what they want a little later in life.
Drew, I am presently working on my PhD now in Information Science although I am not sure exactly when I will finish. I am taking 2 courses next semester.
Are you going to Rutgers New Brunswick? That's where I attend. We should try to hook up for coffee after you get settled. Oh let me warn you that parking there is a nightmare.
Congrats, Drew!! And don't worry--you won't be overlooked for all of the 'young whippersnappers'!! This young whippersnapper can't get a job b/c they are looking for people who are older, with more experience. Best of luck to you. It's a great feeling to finally find your path.
I am all aglow here from the warm words of encouragement. Thanks!
Ally S., I will be going to Rutgers, but won't be there until... let me think... probably winter 2007, maybe fall of 2006. Geez, that seems like a long way's away now that I actually figured it out. Oh, well, slow and steady, but at least on course.
Drew, congratulations on your A in Calc II! I took the same class last semester and got a B, but I'm still happy with my grade. It was a tough class.
You sound just like me. For the longest time, I couldn't figure out what to do with my life. I graduated with a BS in biology, but didn't like the job opportunities out there. I'm now 27 and starting law school. By the time I graduate, I'll be in my thirties. So you won't be the only one out there!
At my old school, I often had classes with some of the coolest, nicest people who were in their late 20s and ealry 30s coming back to complete school. Now, the hottest guy I've encountered on this campus was actually 33. You will still be gorgeous and wearing gorgeous Anthro clothes.
