halleybird, u are my hair soulmate! i would describe my hair the exact same way... dishwater & looks bad w/ my skintone! the best my hair has looked was when i used to get it highlighted in HS... it was pretty blond but now that i look at pics i look way better that way. i stopped doing it cuz i didnt' want to ruin my hair and i don't like the "skunk" look i tend to get w/ highlights... i'm waiting for some VIP colorist to sweep me off my feet & give me a free/cheap job that looks great! btw, i was born w/ almost black hair which gradually became snow/bleach blond by the time i was 3 and then just got darker & darker blond as the years passed.

Me too. A salon I went to messed up my color, so I went back to my trusty colorist and told her to fix it and get it as close to my natural color (medium mousy brown) as possible. In the past my hair has been so dry, but now w/o the coloring, it is getting more healthy. I'm letting it grow, though it does desperately need a cut. I'd like to get some subtle highlights, but I'll let sleeping dogs lie for a while.

wow! I was born with black hair too! It was strawberry blond by the time I was 2, and then light blond until I was 8 or so.
Oh, and ask your colorist to give you very fine foil highlights -- it takes forever (there are like 10 hairs per foil) but the overall look is not at all skunky.

thanks so much, i'll give it a go. sounds expensive tho, how's the upkeep? (i.e. are roots more or less noticeable than w/ regular highlights?)

I think they're far less noticeable than regular highlights, because they're so thin. Since my hair is still naturally blond, it blends in well.. I usually only have it done every 3.5 months or so. Plus, each time you have it done, they're doing different strands of hair, so after a couple of times, it's hardly noticeable because you've got a lot of different highlights at different stages

My hair is currently a light brown/dark blond....its pretty much all natural...oddly enough though..I have DARK brown/blackish colored eyebrows. I hate it!
for the first 2.5-3 years my bf and I dated, he never saw my natural hair color. it's been anywhere from burgundy to black to blue to pinkish red, to kind of an orangey color (not attractive, let me tell you!!) now it's a sort of mousy dirty dishwater blonde. I've been told it's really pretty and that people will spend money to get it like mine, but i just don't see it. i think it's ugly.
Mine is naturally a dishwatery, mousy brown, and it could easily go blonde. But since I'm part latin, my skin has a lot of olive in it, so I think the blond just looks weird. I dye it a chocolate brown, which i think looks more sophisticated. Oddly, girls compliment me all the time on it (it's fine, but super-shiny) but guys always seem to be asking "have you ever thought of dying your hair lighter?" so I'm not sure if I should keep it or go back to lighter. Or auburn.
