Yay - I am so happy to see this new forum:). Okay, I need your opinions/advice. I may have a job opportunity with a really great company. The job is very demanding (in a good way), the company has amazing benefits (will pay for my masters, free food and drink, lots of vacation, etc) and a great reputation and the job would be $20,000 more a year than I make now.
The issue: I live and work in downtown Chicago. The job is in the northern suburbs and my commute everyday would be at least 30 minutes to and from work. That is if there is no traffic whatsoever...which never happens here. I do have a couple of friends that work there too and they carpool and have already told me that if I want to come with I am more than welcome. Would you do it?

It sounds like such an awesome job. How much longer are you committed to your apartment/current living situation? Could you commute for a while and just move a tad closer later? It almost seems too good to pass up over commuting 45min-60min each way. I did it for 4 months with a job and honestly it sucked for the first few weeks but then you get use to it and it isn't bad at all. Plus if you are carpooling it would help save on gas and keep you company.
Honestly I would take it and not think twice about it.
Hi Farrah - I posted yes.... I actually recently moved away from my job, giving myself a 20-30 minute commute in the a.m. (depending on traffic... often at night it can take 45 minutes to go the 5 miles from Arlington into downtown DC where I live!) when I used to live 4 blocks from my job in Arlington... but moving into the city was too much worth it to me. The commute doesn't bother me at all because the benefits outweigh it. And I think in your case the extra $20,000 and other benefits make the commute well worth it. I'd go for it... I know you've been wanting to get out of PB for a while and this sounds like a great opportunity not just to leave, but to build your career and education. Just my .02....

Think of it this way - You are being paid $20,000 for that 1/2 hour each way commute! I voted yes - it sounds like the benefits far outweigh the cost. Go for it!

Moving out of the city is not an option at all. Wild horses couldn't drag me out to the suburbs. At least not at this point in my life.

it is totally worth the commute. while it's nice to work close to home, you'll get used to the commute. i used to commute an hour+ every day and kind of miss the time in the car alone. it gave me a way to seperate the work/school day from home, so by the time i got home any issues i was having were worked out in my head and i could enjoy being home.
hi! Congrats on this new job offer. Since you don't want to move the burbs, maybe there is a different part of the city you could move to that would shorten the commute. I don't think you should turn down a good opportunity to advance your career (and get more $) just because of a commute. But I did just visit my brother in Chicago, and when I drove to the outlets in Aurora it took forever and a day to get there and back (construction and traffic), so I know traffic there sucks. I'd say go for it!
i voted yes as well but make sure that another company (one in the city maybe?) isn't willing to offer as much as this current prospect. i just remember you saying PB was underpaying you by like 15 to 20% or something (bastards!) so maybe there are other companies that will value you just as much as this one in the suburbs.
regardless though, if it's just a question of the commute and there are no other options besides your job at PB and this offer, i'd take it. and i don't think you'd have to move to the suburbs (lol at the wild horses comment ) i've had to deal w/ hellacious commutes but honestly once you get used to it, it's really not that bad. of course now that my commute is much shorter i'm like how in the world did i ever put up w/ that? what i'm trying to say is you'll adapt and it will be fine. i also recommend upping your cell phone minutes--i was on the phone constantly while driving and it made the ride go by so much quicker.
Farrah, three words: GO FOR IT!! I'm pretty sure I know which place you're talking about. They do our benefits. Anyway, I think it's a great opportunity for you. The fact they pay for your school is major. You should definitely take advantage of that (hear it from me, I finally accepted the fact I have to pay for MBA myself because my company keeps giving me the runaround - incidentallly I'm also looking for another job).
Okay, so the money will be way better. Food will be free. And school will be free. If you take classes in Evanston it won't be so far. And even though I've heard tons of horror stories from multiple people (Jan's super-smart sister quit, my friend Carolyn also quit there to go to Accenture, most of her friends have quit, and a guy I met during Chicago cares who'd just about had it and was quitting the following week). BUT, YOU CAN ALWAYS LEAVE WHEN YOU OUTGROW IT. That is exactly what all these people did. And you will have built up your resume (not that it needs much building up) with great experience from a renowned company and a graduate program (free!) under your belt. It's a win/win situation IMO.
Have you gone for an interview? Let me know more details when you have a chance. By the way, we should get together soon, did you get my email?

stop reading these posts and call and accept the job. then write us all back and we can discuss the new outfits you'll need. what kind of job is this for? just curious...it sounds great...wish law gave free food and drink...altho i suppose i'd end up writing to the heath/diet forum more often....
I only live 10 miles from the public library I work in, but my commute can take me 30-45 mins depending on the traffic! It can take up to an hour if I don't time it right coming home. (Rt.1 in the Northeast Corridor, a proverbial nightmare)
I'd look at this as a minor inconveinence for the extra $20k a year.
go for it! you're always unhappy where you are now, and a half hour commute (especially when you can carpool with friends) really isn't bad. especially for an extra $20k. and what's this about food and drink? i've never even heard of such a thing (i guess i need to get out more!)
you should definitely take it...like vanessa said, you can always quit when you're over it.

With a $20,000 increase in salary, you would be paid $76/hour for that commute if you went to work five days a week for 52 weeks, so I say take it! I live in midtown Atlanta and work in a northern suburb (takes about 35 minutes) and use the time to relax or learn new things (classical music, books on tape, foreign language tapes, etc.). Go for it, girl!
