sexy tip #3:  walk like you mean it.  the heels will help with this.  but make sure you're not clomping around in them, I'm always amazed by how many girls don't know how to walk in heels.  If this is you, practice.  remember--head high, shoulders back, no clomping!

Totally ranting on this one.  I was walking about 2 city blocks with a girl who was about 5'10" who was wearing 4 inch platforms and was clomping like a horse next to me the whole way.  It was so loud and ungraceful, and not for nothing, do we really need to be 7 feet tall on a casual Friday?  I shot her a dirty look for being so loud and unladylike and it turns out she works for my company! Woopsie.

Grace, you remind me of an episode of What not to wear - there was a vry petite, very short girl who was in her 30s and complained that guys always thought she was "cute" and not "sexy" therefore wouldn't ask her out, etc.

Even though she didn't have much of a figure, they put her in a slim-fitting black satin dress and CAPOW she was hot and looked her age.  So even if you don't have assets, play up your slim shape, go for heels and skinny jeans, that sort of thing.

Sexy tip #6: Wear sexy underwear, even if nobody but you sees it.

Sexy tip #7: Black is sexy. Navy is unsexy.

Sexy tip #8: Natural is sexy - hair, nails, skin/makeup, fragrance, etc. One should not be "styled" to the verge of death and not botoxed to an expressionless mask.

Sexy tip #9: Having money is sexy because you can afford a healthier and freer lifestyle, great clothes, a massage every couple of weeks, yoga classes, a beach house. And as they say in show biz, if all else fails, fake it 'til you make it!

Ugh. I hate to look "cute" and avoid anything that looks to me like it's approaching cuteness. I usually do go for sexy...in shoes. It's a rare occasion that I'm not in heels and I know how to walk in them....and I love them. In clothes I guess it might end up being sexy (at least in DH's unbiased (haha) opinion), but when I shop I look for classic and / or elegant. I would much rather feel pretty than cute.

IMO sexy is not about skirt length, amount of cleavage, or other amounts of skin shown. A lot of times it's about proportion and coverage...too short a skirt on the wrong woman is a 180 turn from sexy, and an inappropriate amount of skin always reads to me as trying too hard. For me, it's a fine line between sexy and a bit vulgar - I've got a hefty chest and a butt, so tops that might look sexy on someone else, end up with a lot of cleave on me. I actually think a lot of slim-built girls with smaller chests are very sexy - like Elle said, they usually have an edgy, sometimes rock-n-roll-ish style that reads as kind of a "casual sexy". I can't pull that off because I'd look ridiculous, so I'm more of what I think of as traditional sexy - hourglass(ish) shape, and I typically look better in skirts (and heels!) than pants.

I think sexy is about buying clothes that work with one's body type, but also very much about what one personally brings to the table. It's so much more of a feeling and a vibe than in a particular outfit. Though the right outfit can definitely help provide that feeling!

Ok so going back to the sexy thing....I always feel like I fall into the "cute" category.  Maybe it's because I'm small?  How do you bump up the sexy without it being about T&A (since I have no T's)?

I'm small all over too and ever since I was 12 I was always so insecure about my body, about being so skinny, not womanly, having a flat butt etc. I guess that's why I can totally relate to Kitty about wanting to look sexy all the time, cause even though I still don't have a "womanly" figure, in the last several years I really opened my eyes (my DH helped me too!) and saw that petite, slender figures are everythere and are sexy too. A lot of celebs have girlish, petite figures. I guess when I was growing up, vopultuous was more "in" or it seemed that way to me anyway, so now it's like I've been making up for loss time. LOL I don't dress like a ho though. I just always wear fitted, tightish (not too tight) clothes that show off my figure, cause even though I have like no T or A, I think I have a nice shape. I always wear jeans/pants that make my butt look rounder & perkier. When I want to look really sexy I'll wear something that shows off my shoulders, back or legs. Never all three at a time though!

I am so sick of cute and i'm done with the hipster, Punky Brewster, sloppy hoody and ratty Chuck Taylor look. I'm almost 32 and I want to start looking like a woman instead of a teenage Kim Deal wannabe.

Yeah, I feel like there is just way too much cutesy crap in my wardrobe right now. I think I need to go on an Anthro ban.

Maybe this is my problem--I hadn't thought about it that way before.   I usually go for "cute"  because  anything remotely "sexy" looks porn-star-ish on me because I am very busty, and anything too "classic" or conservative makes me look matronly.  I'm sure I'm overly self-conscious about it, though, and there might be some kind of middle ground.  Now that I am 32, maybe the "cute" isnt working anymore.  I'm glad I read this--I'm going to think about it now when I shop and get dressed.  Thanks, Grace.

bumblebee - I have the exact same problem. I don't know what to say, other than shopping for tops is always frustrating and it's a balancing act!

Haha, I actually am sick of how I look too "sexy" in my clothes. I have a large chest and have cleavage in most tops. It is really annoying since I now work in an office with mostly men and I'm about 10-25 years younger than all of them.

I have been craving more sophisticated outfits. I'm hoping to move my closet towards a more sophisticated me :)

Funny you think maybe it's because we are all on this site we struggle with the same or similar issue?? I feel too cutesy lately as well but I'm trying really hard to up the sexy factor.

I feel like I've done a really good job in recent months of upping the sexy factor. I try to think now "Would a guy find this sexy?" when I'm buying things. If the answer is "no way" or that a guy wouldn't "get it" then I move on.

I think the "cute" girl can totally pull off sexy, more so than the voluptuous girl - tighter fits, shorter skirts totally work on a petite girl without ever looking slutty or "too much" so go for it!

Like if you have no Ts, accentuate your A>

Esquiress, you crack me up!

I'm going through the exact opposite of everyone else. All I want people to notice is my face. Especially at work.

This is more of a rant than a ramble:

I have NO shirts that I like. None. I just cannot find cute tops/sweaters.

I went shopping for shirts this weekend and I came back with NOTHING. Everything either doesn't fit right (too long, too short, too boxy, too flowy) or I just feel "ok" about.

I hate my body type right now. I don't know how to dress it when it comes to tops. It just makes me want to wear a dress every day.

I had the same problem. I went out this weekend looking specifically for cardigans or other wintery tops. I came home with a cami, shoes, a party top, and a hat. But absolutely nothing I went out for. Everything I tried on looked like ass.

I hate top shopping sometimes - I'm so sick of my waredrobe tops, I'd love something new - but I agree.  There is nothing cute in the stores right now and I refuse to wear a baydoll top - ugh -  I'm not preggers!

I have a rant: websites that keep sale items posted even though they're out of stock. It kills the shopping spirit when you keep clicking and clicking and everything's sold out. Who has the patience for that? Hrmmph!

I've been in a dress mood - going through my closet and wearing each dress once (casual, every day dresses)

Still loving my cowboy boots and rocker chick jewelry
