Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events

hi All,

I just saw this last night, and it is a great movie. Very dark (for a children's movie). The 3 children are all wonderful -- very appealing. This is saying a lot b/c I usually avoid movies with children (esp. children's movies) b/c they are too cutesy. Jim Carrey got on my nerves, but I'm not really a fan of his anyway, and I don't think they could have gotten another actor to play the part of Count Olaf.  I've never read any of the books, so I don't know how they compare, but I would recommend this movie. I wish movies like this (and books like this series) had been made when I was younger -- I wouldn't have felt so out-of-touch b/c I wasn't "happy" and "child-like".

Anyone else see it?

I haven't seen it but I saw the previews and thought it looked a little scary to be a kids movie.  What is it about?

You're right -- it is strange for a 'kids' movie. The story is that 3 children (Violet (14), Klaus (10?) and Sunny (1 yr?) Baludeliare (sp?)) are orphaned after their parents die in a mysterious fire that totally incenerates their house. Their Banker, Mr. Poe, is in charge of finding them a new home with a relative until Violet turnes 18 and comes into the family fortune. The kids are placed with Count Olaf (who is not a blood relation), and he schemes to steal their money. The kids get bounced from home to home and guardian to guardian, all the while Olaf is trailing them, trying to get the courts to give him legal guardianship again. Meanwhile, the children try to uncover the mystery of their parent's death, and also the secret society they belonged to.

Part of what makes the movie so cool is that Violet (and other characters) dress like they're in the Elizabethian times, while Klaus in just in a sweater, white button-down and black trousers. There are cars and telephones, but the vibe of the story is very 19th cent. The whole movie is narrated by Lemony Snicket, who uses the convention that he is just relating the tales he has researched, so it is sort-of flash-back.

I don't know if I've done a good job explaining. It's just a very cool, mysterious movie, but b/c you know its a kids movie, everything will be ok in the end (it is, though it leaves the ending open for sequels)

I really liked this movie too and I usually hate kid's movies.  It's very intersting visually and the darker story keeps it from being too childlike.  I thought all the kids were great actors too.

I thought this was good, even for a kid's movie.  Did you guys know that Jude Law is the narrator?????  That's right!
